HD-DVDs hit the magical price point

Yes.. I agree w/ having the hard discs/actual DVD's as backup.. I would just store them away after ripping to my external HD, like I do with my music CD's.
As much as I would love to..I am holding off on a movie collection right now until my next computer purchase.. I don't even have a dvd rw drive.

microsoft and the porn industry both backed HD DVD... I was always betting on them. Never bet against PORN!!!

porn is mainstream on the net now, not on VHS(vs Beta).
People still buy porn movies on VHS or DVD? just look on the net.

It doesn't take too much horsepower for a basic HTPC, pretty much any PC from the last 4-5 years will do. Add a cheap capture card for maybe 30-50 bucks, and the right software, and you have your own little TIVO/Video on Demand/music server. Most of your DVDs will take up maybe 5-8GBs, or you can convert them all to Divx and save space--personally I think it's wiser to leave them uncompressed and just buy bigger hard drives.
