If your seriously asking why your comp can't handle half life-Counter Strike please post an error message or in greater detail why you think or why it is that your computer can't handle it and we'll get to the bottom of it, I think we have enough colective knowlege in these forums to fix about anything. again good luck,

for xbox live, i play mechassault, unreal, and bought ghost recon, but havnt tried it. i also play games offline like halo and timesplitters.

as for half life CS, ill tell u my system specs for a start.

me: 1.72 ghz p4, 64 mb nvidia tnt2, 256 mb ram, 65gb left on hd....at least before it all got deleted.

CS requires: 133 mhz pentium, 24 mb ram, 400 mb hd

my old old old computer should be able to handle this even. as for questions, when we had the people talk us through how to even turn on our comp (it screwed it up so badly, it would only get to the system spec screen) they told us that CS is not compatable with win xp. i dont believe this at all seeing that my friend with xp plays it...no1 in my family trust me though, so im still forbidin to download any games yet still.. even wolfenstein, since they think it will screw up the comp. maybe if u could give me the facts in writing, they might change their minds.

well moo those system specs should be able to run any half life based game ten times over. what specifically happened?
i know you said it crashed when you tried to install a patch, but we need the specifics.

trying to think....ok, here is what happened. i went to download the patch and a bunch of banners popped up...not just 1 or 2, but about 10 or 20. it made my computer freeze, so i had to reset it...not restart, but manually reset it. when it went to start, it came up with an ''unmountable_boot_volume" error.

oh yea, btw, my partents say that since it doesnt say xp on the box, it cant handle it. ive tried to convince them by showing them the instruction manual which clearly states about 3 more windows editions it works with, just saying that its dated.

I'm no expert, but something similar happened to me in October. I was playing with some music and and when I accessed the windows explorer I suddenly and for no apparent reason had the partition on my hard drive deleted....very strange. I had some of the same problems you did until I plugged my primary hard drive into another box and repartitioned it. Has been running fine since. But from the sounds of it, you might have a more serious problem. That crash sucked ass, I lost all of my funk music....still though, XP pro beats the pants off of 2000 and 98se.

I hate that unmountable boot volume error.
I have seen that error a few times.
My computer was running fine when I turned it off, but when I turned it back on I got that error.
I had to reformat and repartition, once to get my computer running again, But other times I just kept restarting my computer and eventually it worked again, with all my information still there.

XP Fix

Postby Lord ZOG » Fri Dec 27, 2002 1:31 pm

Did you ever try inserting your original XP disc, then boot off that and choose the "Repair" option?

Most people aren't aware that the NTFS file system is very robust. You might get an unbootable Windows OS, but your file system is fine. NTFS can't be read from a boot disk (it can actually, but not from a boot disk made from Windows 98/ME).

What-ever the case, it sounds like it's too late.

I hope this doesn't diminish your Goomba skills. I've been trying to emulate you, but man is it tough!! Damn Allies won't stay still!

I'm not too thrilled to hear the multiple banners flying around as the last thing you had seen... Was this patch/update located on a reliable server that you have used in the past ?? If not, there is a possibility that the patch had a bit more than just the update.. Virus's (plural? viri) are very easy to produce and sometimes don't even need your imput. There are peeps out there that utterly dispise CS, so screwing with those that like the game, would be their goal in life..(sick bastards). Lessons like this one usually ends up with backups in the future.. I usually make images of the HD once a month.. because you never know.. Also this will lead into another question... was your virus software up to date?

Now as far as the XP not being on the box... you are right on with this one.. The only time I have ever seen XP not run a piece of software was when... hmm... well.. I did see some A+ software that came in a book not work, but thats it.. XP does have a "compatatibliy mode" that will emulate 98 if needed, but I have yet to need this. And one last thing, if a game really didn't work with XP, it should never crash and burn your box.. the updated kernel sets the OS aside from the other processes, so that when a programs craps out, you will ultimately go to the desktop. No more bluescreens.. :D

well...i got the file from file planet. since im not a registered member, u know how they give u hell with those banners. they gave me the royal beating with them. im trying to convince that counter strike does work for our comp, since it easily meets the recommended and then several times that. as for goomba, im looking to get back to it either tomorrow or monday if i get lucky. we lost all our cds, so we had to search, and we only had the system recoveries that we could find............
.........
.........
damn windows, i want linux now.
