So, for whatever reason, I get terrible fps in close firefights and non-playable fps whenever there are smokes put out on the upper base, or in the basement.
I have no idea what I'm missing. I have a pretty powerful computer at work that I play on (16 gigs of RAM, 6-core processor, Radeon 5200 HD card).
Is there something going on where I need to set the affinity to a single core? If so, how can I do that so it happens every time I start the game up. Is there something screwed up between Radeon and RtCW?
My resolution is r_mode -1, 1980 x 1080
I've tried setting
r_primitives 2
I've tried updating the drivers. I'm just kind of baffled what else to try next.
Is there anything else I should try?

use the app Set Affinity II or Process Lasso

ATI sucks for older OpenGL games.
What kind of FPS are you talking..how low is it?

I get a solid 76 fps for the most part. But in fire fights, it chokes to like 20....and when the smoke is put on the upper base, it almost locks up (like 7-15 fps).

That's hard to believe it's that low.
Like Man said, ATI sucks for openGL. Try another video card other then ATI( if you're video card isn't integrated that is) and see if it solves the problem.
If not, you may have other unwanted applications and/or programs running in the back ground.

Turn off HPET in your BIOS if you can. It helps

I don't recall of a 5200 from ATI/AMD can someone show me? Hope that's not an old card.
Grab a GTX 550ti and you're basically fine.

Since so many probabilities, I'll just address few;
-Most of patched binaries wont work well on ati gc's. You're better off to patch it on your own or simply resolve to 10.4 drivers....
-Renaming wolf to quake3 (if some1 proposed it to u already) wont work either as you'll receive period-ed lags...so you'll have to resort back to old binaries along with old drivers...
-Affinity with tweaks (to assign more cores to process by boot script) or via task manager wont help in most cases...so ignore any Q3 solutions you find on a web.
To sum it up, try with original binary (no master list tho^^) and see if problem occurs - if it does we can move to another level, otherwise you're trapped in so called "patch" crap....long story short...post the results, and there's surely a way to make it work.
Cheers,

Actually, I have two ATI Radeon HD 4300/4500 Series cards (3 monitor set-up).
I saw online about changing the name to quake3 and figured that wouldn't work. I could probably get 125 fps solid if I had my cfg set that way. But for whatever reason it likes to choke at close firefights. I guess I'll try to keep digging.

Well, I've found one weird solution.
cg_simpleitems 1
I had it set to 1, and noticed when I had 3 or 4 packs on my screen my fps dropped. I changed it to 0, and held solid fps. Pretty counter-intuitive...but maybe there are other settings like this.

Have you try recreating wolfconfig_mp?
If you still have the old one from previous GC you may be experiencing problem because of wrong shaders loaded- happen in past quite often.

You're not running with r_allowextensions set to 0 are you?

Well,
I finally got it running constant after tons of tweaking.
Turns out, the resolution I had the game set to was destroying my fps. I have a widescreen monitor, so I thought setting it to a widescreen resolution (even though not supported fully by q3 engine) would be cool. Set it to the max 1920x1080 or whatever...and it's solid for the most part except for the instances I was talking about. So I tried lowering it to another widescreen resolution. Same problem. So I changed it to a 4:3 resolution 1024x768 and it was solid....upped it again and I have a solid 125 fps now!
Thanks for all the troubleshooting/help. Only bummer is the game looks distorted. But, definitely can deal w/ that with solid fps.

Been using Ati for longest time, Never had an issue with Wolf that was card related...With Ati cards there use to be a setting that u set in the card and then you were able to use unifullscreen 1 on trenchcoast map..for the life of me I can't remember the settings.Wish I did now..lol
