Quake Live

I just got a shiny new beta key. Not that it means much if their beta is anything like the CoD WoW beta but still should be a good chuckle :)

Seems good to me. Pretty much just quake 3 in a web browser, so if you liked quake 3 you'll probably like this. Works surprisingly well so long as you don't mind it being windowed. Otherwise I'd guess there's a solution to playing full screen on there, seems like something they'd have thought of. Might try f11 when I get home see what that is like.

Also raises the question of whther or not they'll be able to adapt this for the other Q3 engine games. So wolfenstein live, CoD live, medal of honour live, enemy territory live, soldier of fortune 2 live... you get the idea. Literally all the best games of the time (and some might say ever) used the id Tech 3 engine that they made for quake 3.

So it could be rtcw does have a new lease of live afterall ;)

the problem is that it has to be free in order for people to actually use it. the development and upkeep of projects like this must cost quite a bit. this is a great promotion for their company but doing any more games would just be wasteful. they are a business, they need to make money selling games rather than keeping people occupied with free stuff. i wouldnt expect to see ID do any other games like this. but im a pessimist so... maybe.

depends what country they do it in i guess, but i think a lawsuit would bring it down pretty quickly in any case.

In financial terms all the project has to do is break even for it to be worth doing. If the advertising on the site and in the games themselves pay for the upkeep and the development then it doesn't actually need to make any money. Think expanding the brand for free.Especially with later versions of the games coming out. You play quake live in the office and go home to play quake wars :)

They aren't doing this out of charity m8. They've done the numbers just like the battlefield heroes team have and they know there's plenty of money to be made without selling people the game itself.

i know its a marketing play, its not uncommon for a company to spend more money on marketing than they spend on their product. it doesn't even have to break even, it just has to fit into the marketing budget. the whole thing could cost as much as a 30 second national tv spot, i really dont know. but its not like they aren't used to spending out that kind of cash to keep their name ringing.

but there is definitely a point where they could give so much away for free that consumers start to feel content with free stuff. I'm not decalring i know what that point is, just speculating.

if there were an RTCW live, i might be content to play that for as long as it stayed popular and i might not buy Wolfenstein when it comes out. just think how many people engulfed themselves in w:et because it was free.

I've had the beta since before the summer, not suppose to say much about it, but when they say beta, they mean it, a couple glitches, the worst part though is the lack of maps, that should change very soon though...
