ET server is too laggy

No. Enemy Territory is a stand-alone game based on RTCW. It was originally going to be an expansion pack, but halfway through development they decided to mkae it its own game. The single player expansion that was planned was scrapped as well so they decided to make it a standalone game for free.
The patch everyone is referring to is a patch that will hopefully prevent the servers from crashing every 2 or 3 hours. It seems to be working so far.
