The "Mean Dudes" of RTCW
It is now mid-2014, and I was playing Wolf earlier today. There were mostly members of the "usual" crowd there, for that time of day. And, as usual, there was a lot of mean comments made between players. Oh, and the "You can lick my (sic) testicles, XXXX" (that classy bind that highlights the best part of gamesmanship). heh heh
And I was reminded about an element of Wolf that I always thought was special. I mean, I have played many other MPFPS's before, on both console and PC. And yet I never encountered the consistent "mean" behavior that many players show each other while playing RTCW.
It's not a bad thing, it's not a good thing, it's just a different thing.
The reason why that is, is because this 'revelation' was accompanied by something else. It was the dedication, the perserverance, and the resilency of those that have been playing RTCW for so long. It was the release of the GOTY version in 2002 and that I got into Wolf. And there has cumulatively been about 10 months of time where I haven't played Wolf almost nightly.
Today, May '14, there were guys playing that I remember playing years and years ago. They were doing the same play, playing mostly the same class, and pretty much using the same moves as they have done all those years. Look at KMAN / &BaconStrips, he has played panz for I bet about 95% of his Wolf career (I have also played the same class for 95% of that time)! Kman has taken flack, people hate on him almost every round. And yet there he is, playing. That dedication, that resiliency is impressive. And that goes across the board to all those who are still playing Wolf.
I remember back in the Atari 2600 days, when a new game would come out every 6 months. We all knew everything about it before we even played it, we all bought it, and we all had our impressions of it (Activision's 2600 version of "Battlezone" was unbelievably fun - also one of the first FPS
)
But as video games have become so popular, there are 15 new games released every DAY. With RTCW, we have guys that have tons and tons of choices to play, things to dedicate their time to. And yet, there they were today, playing this map for the 957th time.
Here's to you Wolfers, being the "mean dudes" of MPFPS-dom, and finding something more fun to you than many other people have found a most-fun-thing for them....
