The first issue was actually my power supply. This probably isn't your problem since when this was the issue it would just reboot itself.

The second one was bad RAM. Try running memtest http://www.memtest.org/#downiso

It's quick and at the very least will eliminate this as a possible issue.

The third issue was updating my motherboard chipset drivers. This seems to be your best bet if the standard audio/video driver update doesn't work and disabling sound worked since from my understanding the chipset drivers play a major role is audio.

Good luck. Elusive problems like this are always frustrating and can take forever to resolve.

I think I am going to try #3 later today.

I play other games, many of them more stressful on my video card/fan/etc., without problem. So far it's just the OpenGL games like Quake Live and RTCW that I've had this happen on.

Is it OpenGL games or games with Punkbuster?

Sounds like a Punkbuster issue to me...it sounds similar to a problem that was occurring a few months ago with Punkbuster on Windows 7 64-bit...When Punkbuster would receive 'Master Security Info' you would get kicked. This would happen at random intervals..Sometimes the kick would be immediate, sometimes you would be able to play for a while before getting kicked.

Also, download and install the Punkbuster service updater and Run as Administrator:

http://www.evenbalance.com/downloads/pbsvc/pbsvc.exe

However, I tested it out last night on Win7 x64 and I didn't have any problems.

Did you try uninstalling Avast?

I don't really want to uninstall Avast.. yet anyway.

I have disabled it while playing though.

I have this problem too and I've been having it for a couple of years. I think it has to do with PB. Anyways, my soulution, turn off the PC and then turn it back on. I tried a lot of things to fix this including upgrading my graphics card. It didn't work. It's a pain in the ass and it doesn't happen all the time. Some days it freezes 3 times in an hour.

You can also try manually updating your pb files by just copying the new ones into your pb folder from evenbalance website. Sometimes the pb service tool doesn't work either, so just do it the old fashioned way. That has always fixed any pb issue I ever saw.

alright

I've googled and read a lot of stuff about people having this sort of problem dating back several years in other games like Battlefield, ET, etc.

Nothing I have tried has helped at all though so far.

Stop running an antivirus and get a HOSTS file and don't download silly shit.

Antivirus software is so 8 years ago.

if you have nvidia card: http://www.nhancer.com/?dat=downloads

download, browse to find rtcw path. compatibility tab, opengl tab, make driver extension value 4844.

not exactly sure what it does but it helped me.
