I often read the forums to get a good laugh, however I don't normally post. The one time I previously posted wound up being on a very controverial thread that in hindsight I would rather not have been associated with. However I decided to post here because on Monday night I ran into a similiar problem that you described.

I was making some changes to my video card and when applying the changes, I had to reconnect several times. I started getting error something like BANNED:: sharedCD. I could get onto the server sometimes, then other times I would be disconnected with the BANNED message. It was suggested that I verify my CD key in the menu -- I did and the key entry was BLANK. I re-entered the correct valid (purchased) CD Key and I was able to log on consistently after that.

I got back onto the server and explained the apparent solution to the problem. There was some talk over checking my "history" etc. with the results seeming to indicate that my key was stolen or hacked. In any case, since I own two VALID copies of RTCW with two unique VALID keys, I don't know how my valid key would show up as hacked. I normally use only one of the keys which I and my youngster (Hot Shot) play. I normally don't play on the machine/hard-drive with the second key -- that machine is normally dedicated to 'private' browsing.

I was disappointed that it was immediately assumed that I was using a stolen key. I would have hoped the fact that I have always played clean without (purposely) TKing, bleeding, etc. would have offered me the "benefit of the doubt". Perhaps the accusations of using a stolen key were just in jest -- it is hard to tell sometimes.

I don't understand why I was getting the BANNED:SharedCD but maybe it is related to the blank entries in the menu. Perhaps the blank CD key was allowed onto the server and if more than one person had a blank CD key they were kicked as shared? I can't see how a blank key would be allowed onto the server, but that might explain it. I did see this earlier in the thread:

>>We all know ticks uses h4x! He hacked arkaines through a >>trojan on her 'puter, so he could bleed w/o getting caught!

Was this just a joke, or true? If true, how can I check? My security is usually set pretty high.

In any case for my case, I consider the matter closed. I will continue to enjoy playing the ECG Beach server, and think the admins do a good job keeping the game clean and the riff-raff out (despite all of the forum complaining).

From the Punk Buster website.....

"'Your guid is loosely based on the cdkey that was used to install the game on your computer. When Server Admins kick or ban a player from their server(s), PunkBuster uses the player's guid to enforce the kick/ban. Since it is based on the game installation, it is a better way to identify individual players than by looking at their IP address or playing name.'"

Guid stands for Globally Unique Identifier.

So currently what we have is the following people were the original buyers of this cd-key which generated to become the guid of 783etc, Arkain, Dr.Noob and Ticks.

Are you all the same person?

Hey Doc -- nice signature, avatar, etc. Maybe one day I'll spend some time putting together something.

I am always suspicious when "weasel words" like "loosely" are thrown in there. How "unique" is "unique" -- really depends on the details on how the GUID is calculated.

Clearly NO

In the real world, I wouldn't appreciate being called a liar and cheat (wait -- let me rethink....hmmm -- no). I am not going to make a big deal out of it here -- I play just to have a good time. I don't plan on being one of those who take this game WAY too serious. I know my CD key is real, and I am more inclined to believe the problem was related to the game screwed up on my end resulting in the corrupted key entry. Feel free to think I am cheating though (wish I knew how -- maybe it would improve my play! ). I don't know the "history" of Arkaine (perhaps a historical troublemaker? -- I didn't get that impression) but I just found it curious that we both had a similiar problem.

Wow -- 3 posts now. Is that a record -- LOL?

I also forgot to mentioned that one time my husband did get banned for duplicate cd key. 5 minutes later though after numerous attempts to re-join server it worked again and he wasn't banned afterall.

Noob question: Is it possible to have two working copies of RTCW with the two different GUIDs on the same computer?

dude its easy to fix..... more then likely you need to first create a folder on your desktop...... name it key. then go to your main wolf folder and look for a file called key. then copy and place in the folder named key. then go to the start menu and programs then accesories, and choose notepad. when the nopepad opens, go to file and choose open
open desktop and look for the folder "key" open it. then in the lower boxes where it says files of type choose all files .then when the key opens look to see if the first set of nubers match your key if not then delete the said numbers and type with no spaces in lowercaps your key. then then rightr click and choose copy... go back to the wolfs main folder .... delete the old key and copy the new and walla fixed. i learned this on the activision tech support page you can go there and see it
