*Still chuckling over Trevers post*

.... Ok.. *whew*.... on to new things :)

I just wanted to get a few things down here in case there were any general questions on why we do certain things at the Beach. And with people like Jdawg using our forums for their litigators thesis, I thought it would be wise to get things in black and white :D

Why we don't allow names that are symbols or numbers.
Basically this has to do with admin functions. Requests to the admin bot are made with number references which represent player slot numbers. We have to find client information and their server slot number with a 3 letter consecutive string combination. For example, if a guy has the name KILL, and he's blocking, we can't usually kick 'KILL' because so many people have that word in their names. So we do a /clientnum Kill and get all the 'KILL' search results on the server...
Which looks roughly like this:
Killing King #34
I'llKILLBILL #12
KiLlj0y #61
KILL #31
StarKillER #28
So, now we know KILL is #31... which is when we go ahead and do whatever to KILL, ie, !fling 31, !putteam 31 s !kick 31 etc. Here's where we run into problems with people who use numbers in their name--they confuse the bot if they by chance happen to have the #31 as their name (or begining of name). As admins don't want to write this essay out everytime to everyone we make it a standard policy not to allow player names to be numbers. On a different note, though related, if some hot babe wants to private message you a message, she can't because numbers arn't recognized by the bot when it does a search. Darwin would step in at this point and remark that number-names would therefore have a lower chance of breeding and passing on the gene that motivates to choose names as numbers and in 300 generations such people wouldn't exist. A valid point and one worth residing in a thick dusty text buried ina book shelf primarily designed to impress visitors as to how learned you are.

Symbol names can't be accessed for information because, once again, the bot requires a letter string of 3 consecutive letters to search. So admins can't private message such people requesting that they stop a behaviour, or even publicly say something to them. (I have tried 'Guy with the funny name with hyroglyphic symbols dating pre Egyptian pyramids please stop blocking' but it doesn't ever get a response and is annoying as hell to type out). Also, see Darwin selectivity section above. :freak:

Wolfplayer names. Please be original and create a unique name. If one Wolfplayer is tk'ing like crazy we don't have any option but to kick all of them. Lately I've had a penchant for renaming Wolfplayer names to various flowers. It's nice to spruce the server up with a bit of color. :D If you don't want to be called Gladiolas, Lupins or Marigolds, create an original name :)

Ping issues. If a person slips under the ping blocker of the server (I don't even know what it's set at--I think 250) but consistantly pings in over 500 (or so) while at the server, we're going to have to kick you out to keep the playability level decent for everyone. Please choose a server closer to home, ie Ganymede, if you're pinging around 700.

Ping hacks. These are being abused and are now going to be watched for at the Beach. We've been noticing a lot more of it lately so I guess it's time something was done about it. Recieved updated info on what to look for and how to monitor it. So if you're doing it, be prepared to get kicked. We don't want cheating at the Beach. Play the game fair please.

Keek.

So, if I'm reading you right, If I see some one named Daisy, they're a noob. If they have a number in their name, they will breed themselves out of existence. Symbols are also breeding themselves out. .. Maybe numbers and symbols should breed together ?!?

And since we are talking about pings, how come people like Savant have pings of 30 while I have around 125?

The server is located somewhere on the east coast. Savant lives closer to the server than you do, therefore his ping will be lower.

Yeah I know that, but is there a way to have a better ping, other than moving closer to the server or to move the server closer to me?

Pinghack without going into much detail looks like a stutter step moonwalk then blinding speed across the map, hanging in midair then again shooting across the map, this happening with a decent ping is most likely playing with settings better left alone. this is just one example of maybe 3 out there that can be done...dont do it

I'd rather state it out in the open before we start kicking for it. A heads up for those using the various hacks. We will look for them and we will kick/ban for them.

And no, I'm not going to explain how they're done ;)

About the max ping rate... A while back i opened my big mouth and had Man-at-arms lower it to 175 from 250. Well that caused me and a few other regulars not to be able to connect to the server now like me, Liquidd, and Blitz. If any way possible could ya set it back to 250. Ill never ask of anything again! :D

sometimes mine does that if someone else using the router starts doing a large transfer or opens a file-sharing program, but a !disorient and a pm to me will set my ass straight and i'll just quit. :)

u can actually bind it, i'm not saying how or what one talking about but basically u can have a normal ping.. get to the docs, and if u run into someone u an hit the key and lag yourself so its harder to hit then release ,and back to normal for the run in. simple and easy to understand. i'm sure i'm not the only one thats ran into a lagger that is hard to hit. thats basically the advantage. theres one example 'nough said
