Why de we do it?

Postby Bannonsky » Thu Sep 07, 2006 7:50 am

Most of you don't know me. I don't talk much but read all the threads and therefor know a little bit about each of you. At least the part you "leak" on these forums. That brief glimpse of your personnality you share here. And so I wonder...

Why do we play this (or all) game? Why do we find confort in isolating ourselves in a digital world? Why, in all conscience, do we decide to devote so many hours off our precious and too short time on this planet doing something so pointless as playing games? What is it that we find here, that makes us want to come back, to belong? Is it because it's easier to be yourself in these forums than it is in the real world? Is it because here your l33t skills will be respected even if you weight 400 pounds? Do you find here what's missing from your real life or do you run from it? Is it because when you play your game, you forget about everything else, even for a short period?

I know that for one, I could have gotten a master's degree had I spent all of my RTCW time on school. For me it feels good to put aside the stress, the fear and the anxiety of my work, life, health to gome here and read those "most of the time" pointless threads and then go on running up the beach time after time, trying to plant the darn dyno and run those docs upstairs... So on my death bed (hopefully many years from now) I'll at least be able to tell myself that I, yes I for one, know HOW to make a goomba kill!! :P

I used to sit there and play for hours at a time. I would stay up late and be late for work the next day, or for the most part tired as hell. Why? I can't really answer that. Boredom? Maybe. I use to think playing on a computer all day was a lifestyle. Not anymore, I’d rather take a long quiet walk and relax in that fashion. Or take out the 4 -wheeler and blast down the trails to relieve stress, than to sit and get a headache from staring at a 19-inch screen for an endless amount of time. If you ask me, get out more and enjoy your life. Think about how many hours and days you spend sitting in front of a computer and you "Life Clock" is ticking away. What are you actually accomplishing? I am going back to college the first time in years. I maybe one of the older ones there but it's fun. I'm learning new skills. Maybe not l33t ownage skills, but "real life" skills. I play maybe an hour or two during a whole weeks time, or maybe three if i’m bored or it’s crappy weather out. So take some advice from the old man and GET SOME SUNLIGHT :P and peace out.

Actually gaming is a form of stress release and cheap fun. From the days of going to a movie costing 10cents to $9.00, what is there to really do? I don’t have expensive toys because I don’t own the land to ride them on. When I was younger I was in sports, but no longer can play football, baseball. Sure I ski during the winter, play paintball in the summer but again these are quite $$. As far as the social aspect, I game with my 2 best buds cartboy and maday in real life. In fact, a lot of the time I game at madays house with them. Now that cartboys back in school in Detroit it’s fun to game it up with him, otherwise we probably wouldn’t see each other a whole ton except on holidays. To us it’s like a poker game with friends. (we do that to just not as often) I don’t have a lot of time to game, so I don’t know about staying on for countless hours, usually I have to much homework, plus teaching since this is my last year of college. Overall, for me gaming is just another sociable thing I do with my r.l friends.

It's a challenge, to try to better than I did last time.

It is entertainment.

It's fun!

Depends on whether you think there is some higher purpose in life we should be working to. I'm something of a nihilist in that respect so I don't believe that. Spend your life however you want to spend it. It won't change the ending.

Some people sit in front of the boob tube and watch 'American Idol', other play video games. Some freaks play 'Beach 24x7' for years on end. The same map. 24x7. Seriously.

This is my first adventure into online gaming, have been a computer dork since '92 with my first computer a 386, 2 megs of ram, and a 80 meg HD, no cd-rom or a sound card, installed those later, and of course win 3.1 lol, I played single player games non stop, from first being railroad tycoon, to now Half Life 2, and The Movies.

I play this online game for the satisfaction of taking out my bad day on some fools head ingame, I have a stress related job, so playing Beach gets me to calm down and relax, it really calms me down, I just like the flow of the game, its fast paced, and fun, thats why BF and ET never was fun for me, toooo much running, never any shooting right out the gate. I dig the players that are hear on a regular basis, and it makes it fun to admin the server.

i play games instead of watching tv cause it takes just a bit more brain-power. i have enough to do in life and am happy when i actually find time to sit and play some wolf, halo, CSS, or FoM. You normally won't see me on the server for more than a few rounds cause by then my short attention-span is ready for me to move on.

I enjoy games. I feel like a kid when I play a game, not like the 36 year old I really am. It is just about the only thing I still get a sense of wonder from. The feeling of limitless possibility is priceless.

Plus people tend to suck out there in meat space.
