Gaming Mouse... Hype or Help?

Postby =TAO=PowerSlave » Fri Sep 26, 2008 12:09 pm

Hi all,
Been lurking on the server for some time now, but not real active on the forums (first post lol). I really enjoy playing on ECGN and appreciate you guys helping to keep this game alive!

Well RTCW finally wore out the left button on my $15 microsoft mouse, and since I still had a $50 gift card from Christmas, I headed off to Best Buy and came home with a new Logitech Laser G5 gaming mouse. Since I'm an old fart, I've always thought that a mouse is a mouse, but reading the specs has me wondering what advantage a gaming mouse has over a normal one? (aside from the extra buttons which are really handy) What difference will I see in-game with 2000 dpi resolution? Will it transform me from server retard to God status like Slaughter or Chick (or will I continue to be Dogday's bish?) :freak:

Main reason for me buying the G5 was the quick in game sensitivity adjustment which comes in handy to speed up turret turning in BF2 and other games where the aim is slowed down when using a scope or such. Other reasons were the feel and programmable buttons.

FTW by far way better then the G5 and u can't beat the settings

ACC jumped 10 percent when i got it

FTW its all about settings

//CROSSHAIRS

seta cg_zoomStepFG "10.000"
seta cg_zoomStepSnooper "5.0000"
seta cg_zoomStepBinoc "3.0000"

seta cg_crosshairX "0.0000"
seta cg_crosshairHealth "0.0000"
seta cg_crosshaircolor "0xA0FFC0"
seta cl_mouseaccel 0

and this soooo important

//AIMING

bind MWHEELDOWN "set sens_s vstr sens_01;exec long.cfg; echo ^3LONG"
bind MWHEELUP "set sens_s vstr sens_00;exec close.cfg; echo ^6CLOSE"

so when I do wheelup on mouse it loads my long script (see below)

seta m_pitch "0.016"
seta m_yaw "0.022"
seta m_filter "0"
seta cl_freelook "1"
seta cl_mouseAccel "0" //more accurate when used on long range
seta sensitivity "1.2"

seta cg_crosshairAlpha "1.0" //make it a bit more transparent
seta cg_crosshairAlphaAlt "0.5"
seta cg_crosshairColor "cyan"
seta cg_crosshairColorAlt "cyan"

basically changing my view to fov90, makes shot at long distance WAY easier

and vice-versa for the close script @ a fov 112

//seta in_mouse "1"
seta m_pitch "0.016"
seta m_yaw "0.022"
seta m_filter "0"
seta cl_mouseAccel "0"
seta sensitivity "5.5"
seta cg_fov "112"

//Crosshair

seta cg_crosshairAlpha "0.9" //make it a bit more transparent
seta cg_crosshairAlphaAlt "1.0"
seta cg_crosshairColor "0xA0FFC0"
seta cg_crosshairColorAlt "red"

I get huge ACC from edge of hill (real high right side) before wall blows, popping the guys on top of bunker, coming up steps, windows ect

BTW I never see my gun, ( seta cg_drawgun "0") I turn it off, so I just have crosshairs way better for ACC

and last thing you need

http://us.creative.com/products/product.asp?product=16337

best headphones ever created, the more you hear the easier it is, I can hear peeps coming and get ready for the shot

add this to config for better sound 2

//SOUND

seta com_soundMegs "32"
seta s_wavonly "0.0000"
seta s_defaultsound "0.0000"
seta s_mixPreStep "0.0700"
seta s_mixahead "0.1400"
seta s_khz "22.000"
seta s_doppler "0.0000"
seta s_separation "0.5000"
seta s_musicvolume "0.0000"
seta s_volume "0.6000"
seta s_loadas8bit "1.0000"
seta s_compression "1.0000"
seta s_mixPreStep "0.05"
seta s_MixAhead "0.6"
seta s_khz "22"
seta s_Doppler "1"
seta s_Separation "0.5"
seta s_MusicVolume "0.2"

BTW all this settings won't help you to become a star, they will get you to have an advantage

Best is to practice, practice and practice

I found out I play 3 hours a night for 7 straight days, I am way better on Sat next to Sun

and btw the settings on your new mouse are for on the fly changes for sensitivity, so for example you can (instead of using up and down mouse) change one button to change the sens to say 1.0 for far shots and on another one 4.5 for close fighting

i used to own that mouse died after a yr :P

I hope I helped, any more questions just email me dkleitz@comcast.net

ohh one last thing is mouse3 button on your new mouse and mine suck, u have to reassign it

and btw wolf only uses 3 buttons so the other two, for this game is for show

I have no doubt a good mouse and tweaking will improve one's game. I know I'm not the best but I do think I am pretty good at wolf. I use a logitech thumball mouse and the only settings I mess with is intensity 4 and mapoverbrightbits 4. So if you have a good mouse, tweak the config and I rape you you should just give up. I'm joking of course but I always find it comical when I'm accused of hax when I'm running with this set up. And yes good headphones are a must. I prefire a alot due to good sound. When I spec I'm amazed sometimes that people apparently don't hear what I'm hearing. Well back to work. I'm posting from my phone while working a 16 hour shift on my b'day. Good times.

Yes higher DPI has its advantages - you will have smoother more precise mouse movements. I play with a 1000 dpi, 2.5 wolf sens. and 7 notches from the left on Windows sens and fov_105 (yes FOV does matter in determining your cursor speed in game).

I will have to disagree with slaughter on a couple things...

1 - it is IMO that changing your sens (like his toggle allows him to do) will hurt your shot more than it helps. You want to get used to and adjusted to ONE sens. Switching in between two different senses can make your shot inconsistent.
2 - draw gun 1 or 0 really doesn't do anything for aim, its just a preference.

I'd say a decent mouse and pad make a difference. I got a Razer ExactMat along with my G5. Strange to get used to -- a non-cloth mat. I hear a better choice would have been a Fatpad.

Ya Skibb - still not used to this pad. Might have to order a Fatpad online - can't find 'em in stores so far...

I use the "sUrface 1030" from Func Industries.
Have been using it for several years now.

It has 2 sides, one fast, one slower.

Find it at http://www.func.net

Thanks for all the great replies! I like the feel of the G5 and the extra buttons alot, although my game hasn't improved any with it. However, if they come out with a pill to restore hand-eye coordination you guys are screwed!

I'm gonna look into the Fatpad too. Since this mouse has no red glowing LED under it, I assume it's infrared. That made me wonder if one mouse pad surface may be better than another. Most of the posts I've read seem to say cloth is better. (lack of shine is probably what's important?)

@Slaughter - Thanks for sharing your config settings... cool stuff

NP bro, I like to spread the wealth, people taught me, I pass it around

I like my wrist mouse pad, just really seems comfy to me, but it does drag, someday I'll care about that too :P
