Game keeps crashing
I know there are some knowledgeable people on this forum, so maybe someone can help me:
RTCW keeps crashing and it freezes my entire PC (have to power down manually and restart). It happens randomly, sometimes 2 minutes into playing sometimes 20 minutes in. When it freezes it makes a loud robotic sounding noise on a loop.
I have Windows 7, am running it in compatibility mode, and have updated both video and sound card drivers. Also, I have 99.9% certain it is not overheating. I believe it is the sound card because I disabled mine and played successfully for 25-30 minutes before exiting myself. Playing without sound is incredibly difficult and I'd rather not play at all than have no sound.
If anyone has any ideas on the problem or any solutions, please let me know. It may not be the sound card, that's just my guess.
Thanks

Re: Game keeps crashing
Make sure you have Wolf 1.41b (not just 1.41)
Create an exception for WolfMP.exe to not be part of Real Time Scanning.
Update drivers for video and sound.
http://www.realtek.com.tw (Downloads->High Definition Audio Codecs)
http://www.nvidia.com
Do not run in compatibility mode, just run as Administrator (Right click icon and choose 'Run as Administrator'
Also make sure your Punkbuster is up to date... Use PBsetup to update it...Run that as Administrator as well.

Re: Game keeps crashing
I don't think I have 1.41b
when I try to execute the update it gives me this error:
Couldn't load default.cfg - I am missing essential files - verify your installation?

Re: Game keeps crashing
That error is normal in console...
Download 1.41b from here:
ftp://ftp.idsoftware.com/idstuff/wolf/Wolf-1.41b.zip
Unzip and put the WolfMP.exe file in your 'Return to Castle Wolfenstein' folder. Overwrite the existing one.

Oh wow, I thought I was going to run it like a patch, not copy over it. Didn't even notice.
I'll go try this out, I can't believe I didn't have the latest patch...
Thanks MAA

Has anything been changed on the computer?
Try uninstalling Avast and see what happens.

Re: Game keeps crashing
I've had various issues with RTCW crashing over the years. they were all similar to yours in that it would happen randomly after a certain period of time between almost instantly to about 45 minutes after starting.
The first issue was actually my power supply. This probably isn't your problem since when this was the issue it would just reboot itself.
The second one was bad RAM. Try running memtest http://www.memtest.org/#downiso
It's quick and at the very least will eliminate this as a possible issue.
The third issue was updating my motherboard chipset drivers. This seems to be your best bet if the standard audio/video driver update doesn't work and disabling sound worked since from my understanding the chipset drivers play a major role is audio.
Good luck. Elusive problems like this are always frustrating and can take forever to resolve.

Re: Game keeps crashing
I Have same problme on Serious sam 1 a loop of sound and everything is stuck only thing is to reboot.( this game is steam updated)
Make sure you have the last videocard driver and uninstall your old onje before you installing the new one, Use http://downloads.guru3d.com/download.php?det=745
I Have manage to play with higher fan on my vid card, sence this was during this very hot summer.
If you want to test get rivaturner or msi afterburner to see and adjust your fan on vidcard to full, and see if it crashes?

This should do it. Every problem I've ever had with RTCW on a few different OS's has been solved by updating the video card driver. Many times the program in earlier Windows versions would tell you that "No update is available". A quick search of the maufacturer's website proved this to be wrong.
