Need some advice on vid cards

Postby Stryker » Mon Dec 29, 2003 11:42 pm

I'm looking to upgrade my card and need some input. I have around $200 to spend on a card. I found one particular card and wondered if this is a good deal or not. The card is $149. Please let my know what you would suggest in the price range and where I might find it. Thanks!

I just bought the ATI 9600XT for $200.00 (from BestBuy)...and it replaced my GeForce3 Ti. Man this thing is badass. Especially for the money....but the specs are really impressive too. I've heard nothing but praise for it. Alot of people will tell you the same.

the FX5600 is a slow card. you turn on AA/AF or you try to play a DX9 game, and you'll want to rip your hair out for wasting your money.

9600XT all the way. good bang for the buck.

I'll add my name to the list of those who just got 9600XTs. I haven't used it yet, though. But I'm sure it's awesome from what I've heard.

I am going to say the same, ATI is releasing very good cards, and I will have in mind upgrading to an ATI card when my GeForce 4200 gets obsolete in a period of time, get the ATI 9600 it a very good buy with a good performance besides its support for DX 9.

Go to http://www.microcenter.com and have a 9800pro ATI sent to you. $239.00 is an absolute steal. I have posted this a half dozen times but I will again. Recently came from a 9600pro (sold on Ebay) to a 9800pro and the difference is just incredible. Number one is that the 9700/9800 use a different technology than a 9600 and lower. Second, I game with BF-DC which is pretty taxing on the system and the 9600 could not be on full blast. Some guys will tell you that they have NP running everything on high (find that hard to believe, or why even buy a 9800 ever) but I did. The best bang for the buckk is correct on this card except the last month or so. ATI/NVIDIA are bringing out new technologies for 2004 and any time you can get a $400.00 card (three months ago) for $240.00 is a slam dunk and now your best bang for the buck. Many new games coming out and if you want to hang with the curve for games like HL2/Doom/Quake on the horizon then grab another $40.00 and get the 9800pro over the 9600pro. As far as XT versions. Yes it is a better version of the card but we are talking a few % only. I infact use Rivatuner (I think that is the software-I loaded Powerstrip and a few others before settling on one)and clocked my 9800pro a bit higher to XT stock numbers. The XT goes for $500.00 and I bought my card two weeks ago for $299.99.

I put a 5600 in the old mans machine and a 9600pro in mine. The Pro is almost 50% faster not to mention dx9. Get the pro or XT if you can afford it. You will be disappointed in the 5600.

Many thanks to you all for the advice. I'm going to be getting (thanks to the wife, and boy, is it gonna cost me!) a Radeon 9800 Pro 128MB. The place I ordered it from is out of stock, but hopefully will have it in soon. The total was $245 shipped. A bit more than I had intended to spend, but I'm sure the gameplay will be worth it. Again, many thanks!
