M$ now check if your copy of Windows is only registered on only one PC. You can get a new key when you change your machine. There's surely a procedure for that on the M$ site.

If it is a legit copy not used more than three times call MS. despite the bad press MS allows leniency when registering.
If the copy you use has been verified on more than three machines and they belong to you they will allow you to buy just a license. These can be as low as $49.00 for Pro Education.
The goal for MS is to stop rampant illegal copying of their product. You can't blame them for that.
As for Linux. It's great, as long as the software you need is available for it.
Good Luck.

Call them, it's the easiest and perhaps only way to resolve it. choose 'activate by telephone' and I believe it lists a 1-800 number. I always have to call them after major upgrades to my computer. Nothing like reading out those million digit license codes to an Indian call center employee, so be prepared to spend a good 20-30 minutes of your time.

I have never had a problem, and have had to call them two different times. i have installed the same Windows XP disk over 12 times.
They always ask the same question, why are you installing this same disk with the same code. I always give them the same answer:
If just a fresh install:
'because your shitty OS starts to get bogged down every 6 months because of all the holes you leave in it, so I reinstall every 6 months.'
Or, if hardware changed(lets pretend the motherboard):
'motherboard took a crap on me and had to replace it. Yes, it is a new CPU, because I decided I might as well upgrade while I was at it.'
They say ok, give me a new code to enter and off I go.

If you are using it on two other machines currently, you need to buy a new one. You can only use XP on two different machines at one time, 1 desktop and 1 labtop. You do nto buy the disk and are then allowed to install it on any computer you'd like to.

Is it an OEM version? if so you can't. If you bought a copy say from a retailer or even online then you can.
see if this helps you...

I never had that problem and you shouldn't either. I'd call them back and simply tell them that you have upgraded your old machine. That should do it. Please note that I am not telling you that you can legally use it on more than one computer, but hey fair is fair it's your copy.

Linux looks good till you get your hands on OSX, then Linux doesn't look as good. OSX gives you the best of both worlds, UNIX under the hood (if you like to tinker), but a professional polished gui OS on top if you don't like to tinker. Next year the Intel based Macs start coming out, and it will be possible to dual boot Windows and OSX --only on Mac-Intel hardware. I can't wait.
