Dubai Palm Island

Postby CodeRed68 » Wed Nov 02, 2005 6:32 pm

I saw this on tv last night. I forget what channel, Nat. Geographic or one of the Discovery channels.
I didn't even know this was going on. Very cool. They are constructing islands in the shape of a palm tree off the coast of Dubai, UAE. And making this a luxury resort island. I thought this was so cool, just posting if anyone is interested in this kind of thing.

If I remember correctly, they're also building a HUGE series of islands to look like a map of the globe from a high altitude also off the coast of Dubai. Supposed to be an even bigger project than the Palms one. No link... I saw it on Discovery or TLC or one of those channels.

EDIT: My bad. In the last link, you can see where the globe one is supposed to be. Didn't realize they were also building yet another Palms one bigger than any of the others. Weird.

(yes yes it's a socialist website I know I'm a commie pinko leftist *insert insult here*. It's still worth the read...)

Can you say slave labour? I particularly like this bit:

"In the UAE migrant workers are prohibited from bringing their family members into the country with them unless they earn at least 3,000 Dirhams a month (US$816), but most of these workers are employed in menial, low paid jobs and struggle to earn a third of that amount. The UAE and some other Arab countries have also passed legislation barring immigrants from owning any property, no matter how long they have lived in the country."

They can't even bring over their families to have a shoulder to lean on while they work for practically (or in the first case actually) nothing. Bastards...

These people make me sick living like that while surrounded by such poverty and human misery. How do they sleep at night?

What a waste of money...

Savage you commie pig !!! :)
Your linked articles remind me.. Did anyone see that powerpoint attachment that has been going around? First slide says "This is where your gas money is going" or something to that effect. It continues to show you slide after slide of this Saudi prince's home. It is more like a resort hotel and finishes with his audi made of silver! Not silver in color, but real silver!

These islands remind me of that airport they built in Japan. Kobe International ?? I think is the name? After a while, the island started to settle a lot more than they thought and they actually had to install jacks along every support in the main buildings so as the island sinks, they jack up the buildings. LOL.
Hopefully that won't happen here and they have learned from the past. The show also mentioned they took precautions against liquifaction. (when, during an earthquake, the ground shifts alllowing water to fill the cracks and turn everything to mud)
