NovaLogic's bid to grab the PC shooter crown from Electronic Arts' Battlefield franchise kicked off today when it shipped Joint Operations: Typhoon Rising. The game is rated "T" for Teen and retails for $39.99.

Set during a hypothetical US-Indonesian war in the near future, Joint Operations: Typhoon Rising features the latest early-21st-century military hardware. The game will contain 29 different drivable air, land, and sea vehicles--including the eight-wheeled Stryker armored cars and the LCAC hovercraft. It will also feature 35 weapons in its arsenal, including the M4 assault rifle with M203 grenade launcher and the infamous Stinger missile.

The Joint Operations demo will let players pick from five different character classes--rifleman, engineer, gunner, medic, or sniper. The characters can enlist in seven different nations' militaries, including the US, the UK, France, Germany, Russia, Australia, and Indonesia. Players will also be able to customize their appearances by using 67 different skin combinations.

Of all Joint Operations' features, though, NovaLogic is touting its large-scale multiplayer battles as the game's biggest selling point. They will allow up to 150 players to shoot it out on maps of up to 64 square kilometers, with one kilometer of visibility. In addition, the game will feature 12 training missions to help novice gamers get their skills up to snuff. Yes, but no dedicated server..

Yet.

It sounds like it promises so much but can it deliver? Is it the Battlefield 1942 killer it proclaims to be?

I doubt it.

Oh it definitely is. At 100 players there is NO lag, unless your video card can't handle it. At 150 it's almost lag free.

I played PlanetSide earlier. Me and 300 other guys took a continent. Now THATS a FPS that delivers :)

Ryan, is PlanetSide all it's cracked up to be? I'm looking for a new gaming experience. I don't remember if it's free though, like I'd have to pay monthly..?

You have to pay monthly...:(

Do they still have that 14-day trial offer?

Sony = crap company. Worst f'ing support I've ever experienced. After the fiasco that was/is SWG, I will NEVER play another p2p game hosted by sony again. They could stand to learn a little from companies like Blizzard on how to treat customers......

That being said, this does sound cool.......When will ECGN be hosting? :D

Well..

IF JO has a dedicated server we will host it.

can't see it being long from now for a DS...

I can.

They haven't released a dedicated server for ANY of their other games. And they've had some pretty popular games.

Hell, they probably won't release one. Don't hold your breath.

You know, I tried the JO demo...CRAP. No lag my butt!!! Maybe the demo is an old build, but I was not pleased at all. It was like BF:V and a seizure mixed together!

I like their press release, though. In one it talks up how they have 150 player support, and their recently announced competition will onyl have 100 player support next year.

Big deal, 150 player support? Only if you use their stupid little system.

From what I have heard is they are, but at a reduced player count.

Well..

Im talking about a Standalone server. They've always released Dedicated Servers, but you have to use the games GUI to get to it.. which isin't possible remotelty.

You obviously haven't played the last demo or the final release :)
