new pc suggestions for video/audio use

A co-worker is building a new AMD box. He will be doing video work using his camcorder. Thanks.

Questions:
1. Which motherboard is good for a socket 754?
2. Do mobo's have good sound like soundstorm on nf2? Which ones?
3. If purchasing PCI sound card, which one, and which ones have drive bay controls/jacks?
4. What is a good DVD burner and what software is best VALUE for video editing?

I'm not familiar with the sound chipset.

Likely will get 3200 w/1mb L2 cache

No experience at it personally, but vid/audio editing is one of the things Intel procs really shine at. He/she may want to consider going with an intel platform for this project. If that's the case, onboard audio is out (they all suck on intel).

1. Socket 754, Supposed to be the VIA KT8xxxx series that is best (better than the NF3), dunno which brand. I'll try to look up some links (I know HardOCP did a review recently).

2. nf2 onboard audio rules, as good if not better than anything creative has out, especially since the drivers are WAY better. However, nf2 is AthlonXP only (socket 462), so no go if he/she wants a newer Athlon64.

3. Easiest to obtain would be a Soundblaster Platinum, which has a front drive bay with alot of inputs. That being said, if you want the best quality, get some pro level gear from the likes of M-Audio (there are others, but the names escape me right now).

4. dunno.

I would also recommend either a 10k rpm SATA or putting two smaller SATAs in a RAID0 setup

Ok, so you Intel guys, what sub-$300 P4 3.2 cpu would be the right one? What RAM? I've been told Asus mobo is the ticket for Intel.

This is a great point, forgot about it entirely. HD speed is gonna be a big factor when dealing with huge files for a/v compression. I would highly recommend a RAID setup that includes striping (Raid 0, 3, 5 if I recall right). Also would concur with SATA since it's faster than IDE, and offers better cabling (in regards to space and airflow). I suspect SCSI would be the best, but also expensive.
