DVD Burners!

I currently have a Ricoh dvd+R. I have trouble making dvds with it sometimes it works sometimes it doesn't. I have tried updating the firm ware but no luck. This was a gift from my father and I don't believe the unit is sold in the states as he bought it in Germany. what usually happens is it says succesful after the burn(nero) but when i put the dvd back in my drive doesn't read it and the drive shows up as a cd drive instead of DVD recorder.

Any way If you have an idea what my problem is let me know other wise I would like advise on what i should look for if i buy a new one. should i get dual layer, external, dvd-r, dvd+R or dvd+/-R. My price range would be around 200 and the faster the better of course .

Consult with your manufacturer's website for the medias accepted for ur particular model of DVD-RW drive.

It's what I did, now I know not to buy this piece of shit Pine DVD-R media. I only buy the ones that's on the list that's accepted for my Benq DW822A.

While on the subect of CD drives:

For some reason when I put in a CD it will not autorun. I have gone in the registry and done all of the software part of it and it is set to autorun. I have updated all the drivers but there is no new released firmware for it. Is there anything (hardware wise) that I can do to fix this problem?

I have a Plextor PX-708a. Never had a plroblem with any of the drives I've bought from them. It's got a 2 meg buffer and Burn-Proof.

I also have the Px708a. Its a great drive , no problems for me, writes to 4x media at 8x speed. It's also one of, if not the fastest burners available right now. Dual layer burners are probably going to be the next big thing, but we might see a speed bump first.

I also have the Px708a. I like it, but would definately recommend a dual layer burner. Almost all DVD's take 2 disks to copy. Animated/kids movies usually only take 1 disk.

My recommendation... but a dual layer DVD burner. I think you will be glad you did.

Oh, one other thing. Most older DVD players playback -R DVD's better. Newer DVD's play +R better. (from eveything I have read). I've tried both with my home DVD player and have had mixed results. I own a high end DVD player from about two years ago. I'm seriously thinking about buying a cheapo DVD player ($35 Cybertown?) That will do A LOT more than my old DVD player.. plays Divx, PhotoCD, JPEG,s etc... My high end DVD won't do that... but I digress.

So if you do buy a new burner, don't buy a 50 pack of blank DVDs right away. You might want to experiment with the +/- R and +/-RW disks first.

I'm running the Liteon 8X burner without any issues. I've found that you have to choose the correct media for successful burns each time. For media I use ridata and I buy it at http://www.supermediastore.com

I don't care much for speed. I burn at 2X for compatibility.
