HL2 preload begins Aug 17

pre-load means that you can start downloading HL2 early, so that everyone doesn't download at once.

the files will be encrypted so you won't be able to access them until a certain date.

so it's out on steam on the 17th, meaning it'll hit stores soon after :D

I find that stupid. if the game is done, WTF do i have to wait X amount of time to install it.

because if it allowed you to play it as soon as you finished downloading, everyone would download it as well and it would defeat the purpose of the pre-load, which is to allow people to get the game so everyone doesn't download the exact same DAY and kill all the servers.

This is NOT a HL2 preload. This is CS:Source's preload for BETA testing. They are using this preload (CS:Source preload) to test the compatibility of the Source engine.

THIS IS NOT A HL2 PRELOAD OR BETA.

Read it before posting next time.

Don't have time to be nice

Spreading the wrong thing doesn't help either.

Maybe you should make some time to be nice. being rude to people doesn't help things either

Come on, like they wouldn't get flooded with people DL'ing the preload.

I don't follow, maybe you guys can help.

So you can download Counterstrike: Source, but not play it until Half-life 2 comes out, right? I thought that Half-life 2 comes with the same file, except it is not a beta. <- Could be talking out of my ass on this one.

Anyways, any helpful tips, as to what Half-life 2 will have; in terms of the conversion of Half-life 1, CS and so on? What is the difference in getting this pre-load file?

As far as I understand, owners of CS:Condition Zero will be allowed to download, and play, the CS:Source beta in an effort to help Valve. Also, subscribers of some Cafe I cannot remember can download it as well. Perhaps others can download, but the two I mentioned above will be able to play. HL2 is probably done, they just need to fine tune Steam (Please, take your time and make that POS a little better, k thx) before they go releasing such a highly anticipated game through it.

My personal guess is that this preload is a way to get people interested and/or hooked on Stream rather than wait and buy the box from stores. Steam will generate Valve far more money per person than the boxed version will.

Or, it could be they finally learned from all those CS patches that releasing a non-staggered patch can bring any content system to its knees when you're dealing with the volume of players Valve is.

In any case, I simply cannot wait for HL2 to hit the shelves. This game has some tremendous potentional for modding. The game itself and CS:Source will tide me over until some really cool mods are written!

Actually, you will DL parts of HL2 that will not change before release(textures, sounds, etc). This would mean the game is not finished, as they are still tweeking certain parts of it.

Any ideas on how many disks this thing will be on? And if your able to answer that, any news on a DVD version?

Probably 2 or 3 cd's. I see no reason why it should be abnormaly big.
