Gebr.R. Flare gun

I need some help identifying the timeline of this flare gun. My father inherited it along with a WW2 K98 German rifle which has since been lost. Any help is appreciated. TIA:)

that looks cool...is the handle leather or wood? Tough to tell from the photos...

The handle is wood. Heres a shot of some more lettering on the handle. 1.M.G.K. 5.Z U G

It's a WWI German flare pistol.

Comapring the two, I would say they are almost identical except that mine looks like it saw a bit more action. Its kinda nicked up and scarred in some places. The only real manufacturing difference I can find is there is an A stamped on the right side of the gun in the photo and mine doesnt have that mark but all the other markings on the right side are identical.

Not so. The slope of the grip is different as well. The width of yours thins towards the mounting plate whereas the one where Chacal found bevels in just at the top. The serial number on the one Chacal found is a much higher production number than yours. 36000s compared to the 19000s. This could just be a design change for something as simple as accomadating a holster.

Also, Gebr. R. is the manufacturer. I didn't come up with much in research, however it maybe a Swiss company.

Manufacturing plants changing products was fairly common in later days after the war to accomidate for lack of it. Some toy makers and manufacturing plants even produced weapons to aid the war effort. Coleco and Hasbro used to make non functioning guns for US training. Not sure if they still do.

Thats why I specifically said that all the other markings on the right side are identical. I know the numbers on the left side are different.

It could be a potato gun! (not kidding, I know the germans had special design weapons like that, their grenades had wooden handles and so could be shoved into their rifles or pistols and be launched forther than they could be thrown)

That is why I think it might be a specialty design or a variant.
