Private citizens are about to lose thier own property to government seizure known as "Eminent Domain".
http://www.cnn.com/2005/LAW/02/21/scotus.eminent.domain/index.html
I don't know how to post a poll so feel free to submit your opinion....
- Should the government be allowed to seize privately owned property for the greater good? or....
- No, it is fundamentaly wrong in a democracy/free state for the governement to forcebly take private property.
I find this topic very interesting. I'm interested to hear what everyone thinks.

The problem is the government abuses this power, and will 'buy' your home and then turn it over to a developer for a shopping mall. This is wrong, and it abuses the purpose of eminent domain.

This has been going on for years.
In theory its a good practice, when it will cost millions of dollars to move a highway around some guys farm for example, its cheaper to just buy the property for face value.
When the government abuses it however, which it has been known to do, people always scream about it, which they should.

Ive seen this first hand, there are some huge redevelopement projects happening along the jersey shore, 1 in particular is Longbranch, about 30 ppl put up a hell of a fight. but in the end, as is the case 99.9% of the time, these folks walk away well compensated, (the town pulls "eminent domain" then makes the developer pay)
If you find yourself in this situation, get a lawyer, and get your price....thats how it works in Jersey

I found this old guide on E bay that could be useful in warding off any ED claims.

I live in CT, so I've heard a lot about this. Eminent Domain is inherent in the constitution. But, eminent domain is meant to compensate people for loss of their property when their land is being taken for PUBLIC USE. They want to build all sorts of COMMERCIAL property, so I don't see how they can use eminent domain as a reason to do so...

That's also my point. The initial question doesn't reflect the fact that this isn't seizure for the greater good. They're taking land away from private users and giving it to another private user: "city officials there argue that eminent domain also should apply to "economic development" even if done privately since it would increase tax revenue and improve the local economy".
This is of course the ugliest excuse ever. This would in effect autorize industry to have people booted out of valuable land whenever they feel like it. It's another small step towards complete control of your society by corporations.
The court should rule in a definitive way that this is not acceptable in any circumstance, regardless of the financial gain.

Oh please...this was political to begin with. I was slightly joking also. Just blaming it on one party would be asinine...

The same could be said about Dems in bed with farmers... but mostly republicans...
