Anyone else get this game yet?

Man is it cool, but its a true sim. Don't get it if you are looking for constant button clicking action.

The graphics are great, just wish I could up the resolution.

I still have a lot to learn about commanding a sub!

It is a tough game to learn. There are some parts you can control how much of a sim you want.

Like when you go to fire a torp. You can either target a ship via the parascope and say fire (you weapons officer will do all the work), or you can make all the settings yourself. Depth the torp will run, how fast, angle etc.

It must be damn near impossible to hit your target unless you have next to no lag.

I am.. I just spent 3 more hours and have learned the basic navigation and deck gun attacks.

Anyone ever play Jane's 688(I) Hunter/Killer? Now that was a hard game to learn and play; very technical.

I might get Silent Hunter III if there's multiplayer interest. Unfortunately it looks like it needs gobs of server bandwidth. I only have 256k upstream.

Bandwidth Issues
In order to be able to play multiplayer games some bandwidth issues must be accomplished.
The necessary bandwith is highly dependant on the number of AI units and on the number of players in the mission.
Obviously, the higher the number of units and players, the higher are the bandwidth requirements.
During an online session (either a LAN game or an UBI.COM one) the server requires a much higher bandwidth than the clients.

The bandwidth recommended requirements for the host player (the one that created the multiplayer game):
- 80kbps internet/lan connection for a 2 player game (one server and one client).
- 320kbps internet/lan connection for a 4 player game (one server and three clients).
- 1024kbps internet/lan connection for an 8 player game (one server and seven clients).


The bandwith recommended requirements for the client player (the one that connected to the multiplayer game);
- 80kbps internet/lan connection for a 2 player game (one server and one client).
- 128kbps internet/lan connection for a 4 player game (one server and three clients).
- 148kbps internet/lan connection for an 8 player game (one server and seven clients).

If the selected mission is a simple one (reasonble number of AI controlled units) a lesser bandwidth may be enough.
Also, if the AI units are very numerous you may need higher bandwidth.

I have SH3. It is all I have been playing the past week whenever I get a chance. I really like it. Realism is very scalable. I have mine set to 82% including manual targeting and no auto-updates on the map but I also use the weapons officer to do the torpedo solution firing calculations for me.

There are bugs! Nvidia cards are having issues with the UZO targeting device. Ctrl-P seems to clear the UZO. There is also a bug where you might get a huge black square with a huge white circle in the middle of your screen. One fix for this is to start the game by selecting Play from the CD autostart menu when you insert the CD instead of clicking on your desktop icon.

Overall it is a great game although I am a WW2 sub sim fan. I have not tried multiplayer yet. Will have to at some point.

Heh, last night I was just playing around and fired 3 torps at a cargo ship. All three were duds and just bounced off the hull!

Man that would suck if it happened in a real sub.

Right now, I am still letting my weapons officer plot the torp solutions. I need to learn how to do that.

Are there any sort of dedicated server files, or does one have to have the game itself to host a server?

Actually Mugzy, it did happen a lot in the early years of WWII, to both German and US subs. Some ship captains came back from a patrol, having expended all their torpedoes, and ALL of them were duds.

On both navies, the ordnance department insisted there was nothing wrong with the torpedoes and it was human error. The US sub captains had the navy do some tests (by shooting torpedoes at a cliff face), and demonstrated thst, if the torpedo struck dead on at a 90 degree angle, the firing pin would get bent instead of triggering the charge.

On the Kriegsmarine side, the magnetic detonator was faulty, and the crews secretly removed it once at sea.

Oh, and i could host a game, either on my home PC or on my server.
