burning questions?

so i have a few westerns i downloaded in .avi form and are great to watch on my comp but ii would liek to watch them on my dvd player downstairs is it possible to bur theese so my dvd can read and play them i have cd-r's and my cd rom drive is dvd rom-compact disc rewritable. and if i can burn them with theese things what programs/steps do i need to take to accomplish this? thx

First question, because you weren't quite clear. Do you have a DVD burner?
There are such things as CD burners,
CD Burners that can read DVDs (but not burn them), and DVD burners.
So, do you have a DVD burner?

Video CD. If your DVD player supports it you can duse that.

i have a DVD burner..and NO clue how to burn stuff? ive tried a million times and it just doesnt work for me... another pointless post by me... i have made several VCD's before? on just a CD-R..

First
Your DVD player must be able to play AVI files, or whatever type file you are going to make. Some of the newest, CHEAP players will play just about any type of format. I think I paid about $50 for a Norcent DVD player and it plays everything. (Divx, Mpeg, Mp3, Jpeg, etc.)
Second
Are you buringin CD's or DVDs? Most DVD players will like a certain type of media either -R or +R format. I would suggest buying a 5 pack of both types and see which type your player works best with. Buy good media and seacrh the web for reviews on the different types of media. Good media will make a difference.
Third
Use Nero to burn your DVDs or CDs. IMHO it is the BEST burning program out there, but there are others. I do not think Nero will burn movies. DVDShrink is an excellent free program that will burn moives. (If you do that sort of thing).
Forth
Buy a good DVD burner. I currently recommend the BenQ DW-1640 (which I just purchased). Cost about $50. May not be the fastest, but it is the best DVD burner for burning good copies on many brands of media. Read the reviews on the DW-1640.

Some DVD players can play VCDs just fine, so you can make a VCD with your existing hardware (i.e. without having to buy a DVD burner) from your *.avi movies (though, sometimes you have to convert the avi to mpg). Use Nero to help create the VCD. CDs are a dime a dozen so it can't hurt to just try that and see if it works. Sonar alluded to an important fact though: just like how some players don't like certain brands of DVDs or whether a dvd is + or -, some players don't like certain brands of CDs when it comes to playing VCDs. You'll have to play around.

Or...You could do what I did, to make life easier....I bought a networkable DVD player...Hooked it to my network, and whammo, play stuff from my PC on my HDTV 
It works GREAT on the kids DVD's, no more worrying about them scratching them...They just select which one they want to watch from a list, click it and it plays Life is good

The answer is...
SONIC DVD.
You can drag the .AVI to the program, and even set up menus for it if wanted...but it's simple. After that, go to write image to dvd and you can now watch your avi's on your t.v.
