WTF is Scientology?

Thu Apr 13, 2006 12:17 pm

Can someone explain to me this scientology stuff? Does anyone here study it? It is an actual religion? What the hell..I keep readin the Tom Cruise and Katey Holmes stuff and how she has to have a no talk delivery and crap and i'm like "wtf?". Then i read how a baby is in a muted womb for 9 months and i'm like "wtf?" again. A baby hears sound as if a plane is taking off from a runway, it is not muted. Why then do the Dads to be talk to the stomach and why do we play music for the baby while pregnant? To me this Scientology seems more like a cult rather than a religion. L. Ron Hubbard writes dianetics or some crap and theres now a new religion? Can anyone help me here?

Welcome to the club B.
I think most people who do independent thinking and actually have a brain wonder the same thing as you.

Hubbard was a (bad) science-fiction writer in the 1950s. He condensed his weird ideas in the "Dianetics" book. Figured he would make more money by turning it into a religion because nutcases will always go for a religion and not for a science. he was right.

I like the part where you can pay them money to have them teach you something. Sounds more like a business.

"You don't get rich writing science fiction. If you want to get rich, you start a religion." Actual quote from L. Ron Hubbard, the founder of Scientology (from Nov 7, 1948 meeting of the Eastern Science Fiction Association; but he has been quoted at least five times saying something similar)

Just goes to show how many naive people there are in the world.... also shows that you can be rich/famous and still be stupid :)

You know the next best thing is? Inventing one of the motivational/efficiency increasing programs and selling it to big businesses. Giving your program a Japanese name is usually a good idea. It's hard to explain these programs to people that haven't seen them, but basically you take a few nuggets of common sense, surround them with tons of bullshit, then throw around as many buzzwords as possible: paradigm shift, synergy, sustainability, framework etc.
Corporations love this shit, and they pay good money to the people who act as consultants for these programs.

And here I thought John Travolta started Scientology! He was the first actor that I know of that practiced that religion.

Pull a orange out your pee hole and see if you don't squeel. There is no way in hell she won't go without screaming. Only way to get around that is to do a c-section. I'm so glad i'm not the only who thinks this is bullshit.

It was a focus point in a course I took in univ. last term and all we could really do to "study" it is go by the very very vague outline provided to the public by OFFICIAL scientology churches and organizations. The information that the public essentially has on it is very very limited, it is a very "secretive" religion, from the theory we studied its the same as any other religion it its core values and goals. The main thing is its "psychology-based" sessions of counselling and such to help people get over past traumas (like abusive parents, etc) that may negatively be impacting their current life. All in all, its sad that most of the world interprets it as what Tom Cruise represents of it, he really doesn't appear to represent scientology itself, just his own nutty lifestyle and tabloids and PR reps seem to use scientology as some kind of excuse for it. Same way there are a lot of nuts that are christians, buddhists, etc, etc, etc.

PS: I think L. Ron's initial intentions were to have it be a branch of psychology, but since there is a "being" inherent in practices, it had to be classified as a religion/cult/insert choice category here.
