ECGN news

Sat Oct 28, 2006 11:20 pm

Hey guys,

Some changes are coming in the next weeks that you will find interesting.

First, ECGN is closing it's GSP business (the game server renting part).

There are several reasons for this: fading interest for the current multi-user games, low attention span, high cost of operation, high maintenance, increased complexity leading to increased support calls, low profit margin because the market is flooded with low-cost, low-quality, low-support operators.

Instead, ECGN is recentering around voice servers which are doing quite well (thousands of customers) and have none of the above problems.

The CS team has been helping customers move to new homes as effortlessly as possible by arrangement with friendly providers.

Second: The good news is: The ECGN community stays! :drink: :drink: :drink:

Tom (the owner) is still committed to preserving our community. After all, it's where the whole thing started.

We're going to get a new voice server, new forum software (keeping all of Buli's spam of course) and we're moving the pub servers to new kick-ass dual-Opteron boxes. This will be good, especially for #1. These boxes can run 64 players, can run several BF2 servers. One of them currently runs three 40-men servers without a hiccup. Also Jon is redesigning the network, no doubt this will mean better performance too.

So in the end this is good news for us. Some details are still to come, this will take a few weeks to unfurl. I'll move the servers as soon as the boxes come in, at some point the forums will move to their new home (the name will change but ecgnetwork.com will still work).

That's all for now, I'll keep you posted.

I wish you luck with your new plan. It sounds like you have a good grip on where you want to go.

This community and the pub servers have been great, and I am so glad they will be staying.

Frag on!

More news for the next few days.

Customer contracts ended Oct. 31. Most of them opted for a smooth transition to WolfGamers. The feedback I got is everybody's happy.

Now we will start moving the public game servers to new boxes. There will be some unavoidable downtime for public servers because of the move. All servers must be taken down and new IPs allocated, because there's a major network overhaul taking place at the same time.

Also, I can't do anything during the day, so the transfer will have to happen during prime time. We will try to minimize this of course.

No news yet for the public TS and Ventrilo servers. Maybe they being down today is related.

The forums will move to the new company forum server, with a new name and a new look. Still, the current http://www.ecgnetwork.com link will go directly to the forums so it shouldn't change much to your experience. There will still be some customer forums like we have now, but like now there will be very little effect on the community forums.

I'll post more details when I get them.
