When calculating explosive charges, there are formulas that can be used, for example, P=sqrt(T)*M where P= pounds of explosives, T=Thickness of the door in inches and M=a value for the material used in the construction of the door - steel = about 4.5, solid wood = about 2, hollow core = .75, etc.
There is, however, an alternative equation, which appears to have been adopted by the SWAT team in this case, which is P=Plenty.
They could probably have used less explosives and more backing (such as water or saline bags) and gotten a much more effective breach of the door without risking injury to the entire team.
