Call me stupid. But where do these things come from? Who are having these conversations? Are they clients? From a chat room? What is an IRC network? Like I said call me stupid but to me it looks like something anyone can just type up.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Irc
I used to use IRC a very long time ago. In like.. 1990 or so.. I was addicted to chat 15 years before it was fashionable. Before www was invented. I may not have invented the internet but I've been using it before most people. I remember using veronica, archie, gopher.. When dialing into a BBS was what you had to do most of the time to get what you needed. Back when 14.4k modems were the newest baddest fastest connection. I think my first pc I actually myself bought and owned came with a 9600 modem.
Anyway, irc stands for internet relay chat.

It's from bash.org. It's a site where people post amusing fragments from IRC chat logs.
Tony, IRC is like Ventrilo in text form. It's like MSN with several people in the channel.
It's very low-power and is still widely used. Geeks don't use msn, they use IRC.
There's even an #ecgn channel on one of the nets where some old hands hang out.
