SO I can just throw this up and get a bunch of free HD channels on any hd ready tv? Anyone have one and try it? How many channels you get? Does it work?

The only thing you get are broadcast channels, assuming you are in range for receiving a broadcast signal. So figure, at best, ABC, CBS, NBC, FOX and public television. No cable/pay cable channels, though.

Any decent antenna should do the trick, depends where you live.
If you have your choice between cable/sat and a local HD broadcaster, most of the time the local broadcaster can give you the better PQ.

Check out antennaweb, they will take your zip code plus info about whether you're on a multistory building, blocked in by tall building etc, and show you what transmitters are near you, which type of antenna you need.
