My strategy is to buy a 6" (or 4" if you're lucky) monitor. That way, your eyes don't have to move as far across the screen and you can react faster.
Having 8 bit color instead of 24-32 also helps.

I know. I had to move back a bit and push the TV to the back of my desk. I was to close. Hurt my eyes.
