Reading List

Thu Jan 29, 2004 9:40 am

I'm currently reading two books: "The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich" by William L Shirer, and "The Sorrow of War" by Bao Ninh.

On deck:

"Mein Kampf" - Adolph Hitler
"Sword and Swastika" - Telford Taylor
"Guns, Germs, and Steel: The Fates of Human Societies" -Jared Diamond

Any suggestions for additions to the list?

Anything Elmore Leonard. You may have seen a few of his books made into movies, Get Shorty, Out of Sight and Jackie Brown.

The late Stephen Ambrose, author of(most famously) Band of Brothers.

Just finished James Bradleys's D-Day, a very detailed description of the planning and many faults of the D-Day invasion. Much of the book is based on personal accounts from veterans, allied and axis. I couldn't put it down.

Also finished James Bradley's Flags of our Fathers, which is the story of the Iwo invasion and the 5 flag raisers. Also a great read.

On to Cicero, which is good, but a much slower read.

'Catch 22' by Joseph Heller is by far the funniest book I've read to date. Can't imagine anyone not having read it but if you haven't you should definately give it a read.

Whats with all the people here wanting to read Hitlers Mein Kampf, if you want to read the words of a crazy dumbass I'm sure you could find something better.

I have a couple of reasons: History's sake, to see what that lunatic was thinking, and to be able to recognize a crazy dumbass when I see one. ;)
