Bertuzzi should be suspended for a minimum of a year, and should be prosecuted for assault with the intent to kill and sent to prison because of his actions. I think these two paragraphs tell the whole story:

Bertuzzi's attack was not a spur-of-the-moment, heat-of-combat lapse in judgment. Rather, he stalked Moore like a thug working a dark alley. Though he outweighs Moore by about 60 pounds, he slipped up behind Moore and punched him with his gloved hand. What a coward! And as the dazed Moore fell helplessly toward the ice, Bertuzzi jumped on him and smashed his face into he ice. He could have killed the guy. - Jeff Gordon, St. Louis Post-Dispatch

Bertuzzi's cheap-shot sucker punch from behind on Colorado's Steve Moore on Monday night in Vancouver, and then his driving of Moore's head into the ice, was despicable and indefensible. Bertuzzi should be suspended for a year. A full year. It's sickening, and that was the case even before the news broke Tuesday morning that Moore had suffered fractured vertebrae. While I am willing to bet Bertuzzi feels bad about it he should get at least the same penalty Mcsorley did if not worse.

I live in the mecca of hockey and lord knows half the guys love the game for the fights but this kind of incident just shouldn't happen.

Not a hockey fan, but have an opinion.

Hypothetical situation. Bob, an employee of FakeCo, doesn't like Jim from accounting. Bob sees Jim in the elevator, punches him in the face, then jumps on his head. Jim leaves in an ambulance.

Do you think Bob would have a future at FakeCo? Of course not. And this clown shouldn't have a future in the NHL either.
I read that, and I was sick to my stomach. Let him find a job somewhere else. That other guy might never recover. A$$hole.

Murgatroyd....this happened within the realm of sports...would you feel the same way if this happened on the football field, basketball court, soccer pitch, whatever (and not the non-sporting workplace).....

True, but there is a difference between the regular roughhousing that goes on and plain-old assault.

Generally, some degree of violence tolerated in the context of sport, and varies from sport to sport. But when people plain-old haul off and go after someone with the sole intent of injuring them, it alters the paradigm.

I don't go to work every day expecting to get a bit roughed up by my co-workers like some atheletes, especially those in the more contact-oriented sports, do. But neither myself nor the athelete should go to our job and be assaulted like that. It's just not right, regardless of the milieu.. it's just not right.

I don't go to work every day expecting to get a bit roughed up by my co-workers....

As a huge hockey fan and player ( for all my life ), Bertuzzi deserves a suspension for the rest of the year. Hockey needs fights but not what Bertuzzi did. Take the Flyers - Ottawa game last Friday. 416 Penalty Minutes -- an NHL Record,21 players ejected for fighting including both starting goalies, Lalime and Edch (see avatar) btw i am a huge Flyers fan. But the part is NO INJURIES, besides a few cuts and headaches. Hockey needs brawls like this but not what Bertuzzi did thats the bottomline.

IMO he should be banned from the league simply because of the premeditated nature of it. Sure, guys will get vendettas/grudges against certain players, and might go out of there way to fight them, or check them a little harder than necessary, but to hit the guy in the back of the head (cowardice), THEN jump on him and drive him into the ground? Christ, by the sound of it he nearly paralyzed the man, and may have ruined Moore's career (he may never fully recover all his skills/confidence). He should also face criminal prosecution (sport or not, it was a premeditated attempt to injur someone). I love hockey, and like a good fight as much as the next guy, as well as some of those viscious hits, but this is sickening.....

Bertruzzi should be banned for life. Crawford should be suspended for the rest of the season. The GM should be punished, too. All the guys were touting revenge on the Avs. Was this what they intended? The penalty has to be so severe in this case that no player will ever think to pull this crap again. A 1 year suspension would be meaningless next year since the owners may lock the players out anyway.

If the gloves come off at the same time, I'm all for it. But what Bertruzzi did....OMFG

I am all for fighting and am embarassed too by what he did, but I want to know what was Granato (Coach of Colorado) thinking when he put him on the ice when the score was 9-2 and he was "public enemy number 1" with teh Canucks?

This does not in any way shape or form take away from what Bertuzzi did, but I still question why it happened. Crypt, you will even admit that it was a smart move not putting Havlat on the ice at the end of the Flyers/Sens game last week...that is just common sense!

Yes Tommy as a matter of fact I would. If what I read above happened on the football field I would expect the man to lose his job indefinitely and be prosecuted under all applicable laws.

Wouldn't you?

Question nothing. The man in any sane world should be held accountable for his actions. REPEAT, his actions. I know the lawyers would love us to beleive his mommy didn't love him enough.

Now did the coach or the team coax and help create the situation? Most likely. So that should be brought under investigation also. BUT, that does not exscuse him from what HE did.

He is liable for his actions and should be banned from play for life and as stated above be prosecuted under all applicable laws.
