HBO's 'Deadwood'

Sat May 08, 2004 9:36 pm

This show rules, it's like the Sopranos only set in the Gold Rush era West! It's kinda fun puzzling thru their weird mixture of formal english and gutter language. Sort of like watching the movie "Glengarry Glenn Ross"; you have to replay things and listen because they don't dumb it down for you. Also, it's one the few shows where scenes featuring the bad guys are as good if not better than the scenes with the good guys.

I haven't watched it yet and don't want to start in the middle, but I plan on watching when HBO starts rerunning it. I have only heard good things about it, although I've heard that the language is bad enough to make even Havoc blush.

You're right Camel, especially that owner of the saloon.

I've watched a couple of episodes and find it pretty entertaining and it comes on right after the Sopranos.

I have watched one or two episodes. And having been a sailor I have heard the best of them cuss. ... I do not have virgin ears. But in this show it seems to take away from the show. Its distracting from the story.

After a while, the swearing doesn't stand out quite the same way. Also, around the third or fourth episode they started to gradually phase in a much more formal, high english sounding language (with the swearing of course) that get's pretty interesting. Rather than saying "I won't change my mind, so don't ask" a person might say "please don't ask me to amend my purpose"..stuff like that. Pay attention to the language starting around the 3rd of 4th episode and you'll see what I mean. Certain characters more than others will speak this way. I'll sometime rewind a sentence a couple of times just to get it right.

Great quotes, or funny delivery of lines:

-There was fresh stain on my floor, I think the last guest might have checked out short a usefull amount of blood-

The annoying condescending way Jack McCall needles Wild Bill during the poker games:
"That's one in a row for yoooooou Wild Bill"

Good show. i liked last weeks episode when jane is helping the sick and says something like 'i am going to put this wet towel on your fucking mouth.' i do not think there has been one line uttered by her that did not include 'fuck' in it(maybe it is because of the lack of engaging in that act?).

I had read that the creators where going for an as accurate as possible old west. While I feel they nailed it on the visuals, I sometimes think the language is taken to the extreme. Heck, did they even say 'cock sucker' back then?

What I really like is the fact that a good junk of the main characters are based on real people and events in their lives. Wild Bill was even killed the way he really was(though I am not sure if what happened to McCall after the murder is real or not).

Also, the widow is hot. :Image

If Al Swearinger (bad guy, owner of the gem saloon) were alive today he would be the CEO of one of America's top corporations.
He has to be the hardest working bad guy I have ever seen. He has so many pans on the fire and he attends to each of them constantly. That guy never rests!

Yeah, I like the widow too, I kinda hope in a perverted way she get's 'turned out' by Swearinger or the other Saloon owner. She'd fetch some serious gold turning tricks.

LOL, there's a website devoted to counting the F bombs in Deadwood:

I saw the first couple episodes but it didn't draw me all they did was cut inot my game time, i might give it another shot tonight

Best Quote--Al Swearinger: 'Now *THAT* is how you clean a f@*#ing bloodstain!!'

Seriously, I'm worried that last nights violence was over the top enough to cause problems, especially following last weeks episode that featured Bullock smashing an Indian in the face about 25 times with a rock. Some unwanted (for me anyway) people are going to start to take notice. This is getting to the level of 'Goodfellas' in the violence department.

I like it but the audience is a tight group that will watch this in and out. I only see it maybe next year and thats it. No staying power. Storyline is starting to dry up now.

That brother and sister did get the shit beat out of them.

Mon May 10, 2004 7:51 am

I think its only planned to run for like 18 episodes or so, no more.

Screw Deadwood.

What ever happened to Carnivale? Was just starting to get really interesting.

Carnivale's season ended, you have to wait until next season.
