Good and bad news here.

If it is constantly replenishing then people will make an argument for staying on oil. Which leads to increased pollution and no change in the geo-political landscape. Personally I prefer getting of oil and going to fuel cells and more nuclear power.

Just goes to show how little we know. It isn't taught in grade school, but that diagram of the earth's center is mostly theory.

Regardless, what really matters is not how much is down there but how easily we can get a hold of it, and from what I've read, the costs for exploration and drilling have been going up over the past several decades as drillable sources become more difficult to tap.

We may never be "free" of our dependance on oil. Oil isn't just used for fuel... plastic is made from oil, as are many chemicals used to make all sorts of things. But we can reduce our demand.

Aside from the environmental and political issues, I think economics will take care of any oil shortage in the future... as oil becomes more scarce, the price will rise, and other energy sources will fill in the demand.

The only way to artificially speed up this process to meet environmental and political agendas would be to tax oil and use the proceeds to fund R&D. Not sure there is enough public support for that in the US, not to mention in our spread out country we depend too much on cheap energy just for transportation. These advances are more likely to come out of Europe or Japan where there are stronger economic and political forces pushing in this direction.

Recycle yoiur plastics.

And make people have to have permits for trucks and other gas guzzling vechiles. *cough SUV cough*

No offense, but that is idiotic. What do you drive? How big is your family? Do you have a farm? Do you haul trailers?

How many refineries are still in operation in the US?
Are they at 100% capacity?
Why aren't new ones being built?

IMO, if you or anyone else feels you don't pay enough in fuel taxes, maybe you should consider moving to Europe, over there you would pay closer to $5/gal of fuel(gasoline).

I never said anything about saving money. But I do beleave unless someone needs a gas guzling vehichles getting a permit to have obne wouldn't be excessive.

Just cause some of you think this way, its plain stupidity. If someone can afford to drive a limo or large vehcile around then thats their choice. Just cause the Limosine Liberals think $2/gal. of gasoline is high, when it is not, gasoline prices have been very low compared to inflation.

Telling people what they can or can't drive is the stupidest thing I've ever heard. Who cares if you drive an SUV for you alone or your family? Not like anyone's going to ask you on the road if you have a family.

BTW, CDL's are only required because of their size and weight of the trucks.

It's not a matter of feeling... If we're going to reduce our dependance on foreign oil it has to be done through market forces... quotas on hybrid vehicle sales or R&D into alternative energy aren't going to motivate the avg. American to switch energy sources unless it affects their pocketbook. that's why WalMart is doing so well despite all the cries over lost family businesses.

Now, a valid counter argument could be: there is no need to reduce our dependance on foreign oil, because the situation is not as bad as it's made out to be in the media... or that the market will create incentive when the time is right, and that time is not now.

Well when it comes down to it, its not a matter of feeling, its the fact that the Limo Liberals, have it, so no new refineries that we need, will not be built. AND WHAT DOES WALMART HAVE ANYTHING TO DO WITH GASOLINE PRICES OR DEPENDANCE ON FOREIGN OIL?

Government made it to cars wern't allowed to use diesel fuel anymore. Government made it so cars wern't allowed to use leaded feul anymore. I don't see what the problem with having to have a permit to have/drive anouther big pollluter and gaz guzzler thing. You have to have a permit to drive motercycles. SUVs are just as dangerous as motercycles but unsafe to the people they hit as well as the people inside because they flip easy and can't make turns.

And why would anyone have an SUV?! They are off road vehicles that can't really....offroad, and they can't really stay on the road iether. Put big polluting vehicles in their place! In the junk piles!

ANd if someone needs an SUV or diesel fuel truck they could just fill out a couple papers at the department of motervehicles. I don't see how having to apply for and be given a permit is restricting anyone at all.

You also forgot to mention that in europe they don't have SUVs or gas guzzling cars! Their vehicles get about 2x the mileper gallon what they get over here. (At least from what people have told me)

You need a permit to ride a motorcycle because it is one of the most dangerous vehicles. No seatbelts? No airbags? Only two tires? Ibelieve there are more deaths per year in motorcycle accidents a year than there are SUV deaths. SUV's are safe vehicles. I'ts the SUV's with poor center of gravities that flip easily. Same with jeeps.

What about a boat? You need a license for that too. Same with a jet ski, and ATV's (in some states).

SUV's have come a long way with pollution.

Filling any paperwork out at the DMV costs valuable time and money. Why waste that time and money for SUV's?
