Best Vietnam movie?

Postby shockwave203 » Fri Feb 20, 2004 11:59 pm

I'm starting to REALLY look forward to Battlefield Vietnam. Today I watched the movie "We were Soldiers", and I must say, it's one of the best Vietnam movies I've seen. I've watched Platoon, Full Metal jacket and Apocalypse Now, but I think We were Soldiers takes the #1 spot with me. After watching, it bumped up my excitement factor for BFV by a lot.

What's your fav?

Here is how I rate them:
Funniest: Full Metal Jacket (Beginning Drill Intro)

Least Realistic: FMJ

Realistic with cussing/emotional aspect: Platoon

Over-drama: Platoon

Realistic, but w/o realistic cussing: We were soldiers

You guys should watch "The Deer Hunter". It stars Robert Deniro and Christopher Walken. Walken won the Oscar for this one too. Anyway, it's a story about a bunch of middle class guys, living in Pennsyvania, who decide to go out to Vietnam. All Hell breaks out and it has a pretty grim ending to go along with it. However, this is a Vietnam classic and really shouldn't be missed with the other big name titles.

The funniest has to be Full Metal Jacket...
I love when the guy quotes about leading civilians a little less than soldiers with the Helichopter guns.

But my fave is We Were Soldiers.

I have to agree with Ngame on this. The Deer Hunter is a great movie. I mean DeNiro is the man and Walken put on one helluva performance.

Deer Hunter is the best if you are looking for a downer of a movie. it is long, emotional and disturbing, but it is a very good movie.

We Were Soldiers is also a very good movie. What makes it so great is it also shows what happens back home, not just what happens during battle.

Platoon was a great, straight forward movie. There was nothing 'gimicky' about it: it is what Stone experienced during his time in Vietnam.

Apocalypse Now is a thought provoking movie, one you have to listen very carefully to, let alone just watch. It is long, expecially the Redux version, but still a very good movie.

Full metal Jacket is also a very good movie. What held it back, however, was when it was released. It was released after the big 80's vietnam movie bandwagon. However, Kubrick started working on the film before that bandwagon started.

Good Morning Vietnam. Great movie. Any movie where Williams is able to adlib is going to be funny as hell.

Boys of Company C. Ok movie. About the only good thing is it showed that a movie about Vietnam, a war still fresh on American minds, coudl be successful.

Hamburger Hill, crap, pure crap. Flat acting, horrible directing and a script full of cliches. It was just riding the success of Vietnam movies.

Apocalypse Now - one of the greatest movies of all time.
Platoon - Disturbingly good
Hamburger Hill - Oldie but goodie
FMJ - R. Lee Ermey makes the whole movie

My father, who fought in the war, says that to him, We Were Soldiers is the most realistic in terms of combat....Even his war buddies thought so too. The NVA General ending was most unrealistic though he says. It's clearly made up, how can anyone know he walked up to the splintered tree and planted a flag on it....

Another thing worth pointing out is that the NVA never had organized uniforms, they wore different clothing, mostly the things they'd wear as if they were at home in the villages...only the officers had uniforms and even then, it was very plain and hard to distinguish because the NVA tactic was to blend in with the locals in the jungles, that way American troops would find it hard to distinguish between soldiers and civiliians, making their offensive difficult. They used children, women even old people when making attacks...scary...but effective.

The actor who plays him is a famous Vietnamese actor actually, thought he gave a good performance...and it was pretty cool to actually have understood the Vietnamese things he said without the subs.

I couldn't get the image of the soldier who had his face napalmed out of my head for weeks after first seeing the movie... :freak:

My faves and notes...

Deer Hunter - great movie. definitely a benchmark for others

Apocalypse Now - another great, deep movie. dad was a river rat for 3 tours in vietnam.

Platoon - pretty realistic according to my father. first vietnam movie that i watched with him - he still won't talk about it.

We Were Soldiers - my uncle was one of the 3 soldiers that was separated - if you watch the movie, you'll know what i mean. he says it paints a relatively accurate picture of his experience.

I'm really into Vietnam war movies. My father and 3 of his brothers spent extensive tours there. They don't talk about their experiences. However, when they all get together at family reunions (every 5 or 10 years) they'll sit around the table and drop a few minor hints...
Give a man a fish and he'll eat for a day. Teach a man to fish and he'll sit in the boat and drink beer all day...

Apocalypse Now:The conflict is really centered down upon Brando and Sheen aside the conflict raging outside in the jungles. It's a mental thriller (aside being fictional) but the action scenes are superb and who doesn't like Robert Duvall?

We Were Soldiers:While not my favorite, it still conveys the brutal realities of warfare and the slaughter of human life.

FMJ:This one has Kubrick's mark on it with gritty humor and the disturbance of war all wrapped into a neat package.
