the NHL has a lot of responsibility for what happened here. they have allowed hockey to turn into "ultimate fighting championship on ice". i believe that they have not tried to control the fighting because they think that is what draws fans to the games.
hockey is a rough physical sport, but the fighting has gotten out of hand i think. you can have a good hockey game without the fighting.

Negative. Offsides is when one (or more) of your players is across the opponents Blue Line as the puck crosses that Blue Line.Originally posted by Pvt. Boisclair
that's offsides, icing is if you send the puck across both blue lines then an opponent touches it before one of your teammates
i think
Oh, and Parrot, icing is legal if your opponents are on a powerplay.

I played hockey for many years, so lets clear this up, if possible (I've had cricket explained to me many times, but I still don't get it
)
Icing is shoting it from inside your blue line to behind the opponents goal line, without it being touched, or at least in range to be touched, by an opponent, excluding the goalie.
Offside is when your team is inside the opponents blue line before the puck, and anyone from your team touches it. That's why the ref's hold their hands up, but don't blow the whistle until your team touches the puck, cause if everybody gets out, it's not offside anymore, the play continues.
Offside is also the term used to describe the 2 line pass, just to cause confusion I think.

I hate to bash on you for this but Icing is when you clear the puck from your side of the Half Ice Line (Red Line) passed the goal line of your opponet and your opponet has no chance of touching it along the way, also voids if it goes through the crease and/or touches the goalie. And also you said goalies are allowed to ice the puck...that is not true if the goalie clears it all the way down its still icing.

Now to the real bashing....
As soon as i saw Inspector Gadget's Last Post i soon realized we have some none hockey fans chiming in on this.....
Baseball-- Roger Clemens's throws a broken bat at Piazza, no big deal, thats certainly not attempted assault. It's amazing that Major League Baseball cannot get its players to submit to drug testing and has pitchers who throw at guy's heads, yet people zero in on one unfortunate incident in hockey and point to it as an example of what's wrong with the game.
NasCar- Guys tapping people out (Earnhardt was good at it) causing people to crash at speeds of 150mph+, that isn't anything against the law.
"Those who know hockey understand that a line was crossed and that what Bertuzzi did is should never be part of the game. They are likely the same group that will use this as another argument for abolishing the instigator rule -- which gives an extra minor penalty to the player who starts a fight -- and letting the players police themselves by exacting retribution before situations like this arise. "

If any of you have ever watched the games of 60's 70's where brawls were a common thing and fans loved it as it was part of the game you would understand more about the NHL. I (being a die hard Flyers fan) watched the Broad Street Bullies win back to back cups in 76 on tapes and espn classic. Back then the Flyers beat the hell out of their opponet wore them down and lit up the scoreboard. With Hall of Famers like Bobby Clarke and Bill Barber to do a lot of scoring, and the toughest team in the league, every team feared a 7 game series against them. Far more tiring to play football playoffs, 7 games in 2 weeks against the Flyers was certain a loss back then. That's the kinda of hockey real fans live for in the game, the kind that needs every ounce of energy every shift of every game. Yes cheap shots like Bertuzzi's weren't happening back then, but neither are they now! 2 Incident's were 2 players were injured in the last 8 years may seem like a lot, but its no different then any other sport. Bashing of hockey players like this is only ruining the game more and more. Id do almost anything to see old time hockey return where brawls break out like in Philadelphia vs. Ottawa on the 5th of March happen weekly. Many of you also mention that hockey is more fighting then it is skill, you obvisouly don't watch much hockey lately because fighting has been lower then it ever has been and with more European players coming over that are all about Speed/Shooting/Deking and not fighting ... more fancy moves and nice plays happen all the time. Im not sure where this game is airing but if you want to see real hockey, watch the Flyers Vs. Ottawa in Philadelphia on April 2nd, its a Friday at 7pm.
