ATI... Nvidia... who cares?
Give me a fast card from either company! I currently own a GF4 4200Ti, but will be purchasing a ATI 9800 Pro soon....

Customer loyalty.. Bah... I have none!

Speed/Image quality/Cost.. and not necessarily in that order...

Maximum PC is talking some serious smack concerning the NV40.

256mb ddr3
16 true pipelines with two pixel shaders per pipeline.
speeds in excess of 500mhz.
Sounds to me like they're in the mood for a comeback.

I'm just going to wait till I can see what ATI has to offer in a side-by-side comparison with the new Nvidia card, do some adjustment for pricing, and make my decision then. I'm not predisposed to purchase one brand or the other, I just want the better of the two cards.

Keep in mind, the inquirer is wrong more often than right. They love to perpetuate rumors, and make wild speculation...

Ex: These are the same geniuses who predicted the NV30 would smoke the 9700pros (which we all now know is not even remotely close to true)

I've read that both companies are trying to 'trick' their competition into thinking their cards are slower than they actually are. one rumour is that the 6800ultra that was released to reviewing sites was actually a crippled version of the card, and that the one released on market will be faster. (albatron has 6800's with a core clock of 600mhz, and memory at 1Ghz) ATI was thought to have 12 pipes but it now looks that it actually has 16. the leaked ATI powerpoint presentation may have been a trick too, to make Nvidia think the R420 won't support PS3.0

You know what I think? I don't give a hoot until I see benchmarks!

Benchmarks I say! Benchmarks!
