Getting WinXP

I'm getting windows XP pro.

$137 for an OEM full install version.

First thing first, that is a full install version correct?

I want to backup some things to CD before I install XP but my CD-RW didn't come with drivers but crappy software that doesn't work. I had a demo for nero burning rom and that works but the demo expired and I was wondering if any of you guys had any suggestions of a CR-RW utility I could use for CD-R disks. (The wares that came with the cd-rw wouldn't use cd-r only cd-rw

)

I also want to resize my partition so I can have a dual boot because some of my older beloved games won't work on XP. Any siggestions on iether or?

Yep that's the full install.

If you're going to do a dual boot just because you don't think your software will work with XP, I was wondering if you knew about the "compatibility" option for applications in XP. I'm sure it has its limitations but there are options for Win95,98/ME, 2000 and NT when it comes to launching .exe's. Probably the biggest issue you'll have with older games would be the video card drivers and directx (even though microsoft says it's backwards compatible). If anybody has any experience with XPs compatibility mode then hopefully they can talk about it in this thread.

If you end up doing dual boot, understand that depending on what operating systems you're setting up, the order in which you install them can be very crucial. You might accidentally overwrite a bootup file that the BIOS/hard drive looks for if you install out of order. (ie install win2k full version (non upgrade) first then install win98 = screwed up install)

trust me, many of my games won't work with xp. I've tried on other PCs before.

i like Home better than Pro gor gaming and most user dont need all the extra baggage that pro brings along(networking and security stuff)

i havent found a gam that doesnt run in XP...MOF i got Leisure Suit Larry to run that was made to install in DOS only mode.

Er, weren't those games made for DOS primarily? sheesh dude get with the times

Those were like 1994-1995 games, especially Mech 2 (they made Mech 2 for Win95 though.)

Have you try running those games by setting the Windows Compatibility mode for Win95 at least inside WinXP?

Hey Lordshard...

If you know someone in college still, see if they can get a deal. Someone who used to work for me was back in school getting the masters. He got me XP Pro AND XP Pro office for $5 apiece.

The schools somtimes have 'special' deals with MS...check it out if you can.

You know you can only buy the OEM version of XP if you also buy some hardware, right?

And it's not like you can just buy a cheapo mouse or something, they usually want you to buy a major component, like a sound card or hard drive.

I got my for a similar price, but I was also looking to buy an Audigy 2 at the time, so it worked out. If you want to buy it without purchasing a peice of hardware, you might need to find a less than reputable dealer willing to skirt the issue.

Nope, my college only has a "special" deal for an upgrade version of winXP home educational version.

And no need to worry Cpl. Bingham I bought $260 worth of ram when I bought it. Should get here tommarow.

I just got windows XP Pro like 2 months ago for 90 dollars (OEM) at a computer show and didnt have to buy any hardware. I think thats only if your buying it online like from Newegg that they make you do that.

So your best bet would be to go to a comp show and get it for nice and cheap.

No, it's supposed to be be everywhere, The ones that don't risk getting on Microsofts bad side and being denied the right to sell MS products.
