RAM Upgrade Questions
Hey all you computer wizards, how good would it feel to help out an upgrade noob with some info? Pretty great I hope, heres my situation. I have a Dell Dimension 8200, P4 2.53 GHz, with 512 MB of ram. I am looking to double my total ram to 1024MB, but I can't seem to locate any description of what kind of ram i have in the computer. Also do you guys have any advice on ram manufactures pros/cons of different suppliers ect. I would like to pick it up tommorow on my day off from someone in town(Best Buy, Comp USA, Frys Electronics). Any help will be greatly appreciated, not to mention a karma boost for you.
Thanx

There's not a whole lot of different manufactuers that make pc800 Rambus. Samsung and Kingston are the only two I can think of. The rest are probably just rebranded samsung. You may be able to find a deal on ebay. Just remember you need a pair of sticks.
Dell's website should have all the information you need about your system. I just did a quick google search to find out the type of memory your system uses.

1. http://www.crucial.com is your friend. It has a very comprehensive (and highly accurate) database for finding out what memory you'd need. Unfortunately, they stopped making Rambus along with 95% of the mem industry about 2-3 yrs ago. You are somewhat screwed here, no real other way to say it,
2. Aida32 is great, but unfortunately he decided to stop making it (sorry Tommy!). SiSoft Sandra is also a great tool. However, as MajorFatty points out, Dell has all the info you'd need about your system. In their support section, if you enter your Service Tag (usually 6-8 characters, on a sticker somewhere on the pc/laptop) it'll tell you the exact (or damn near) specs it shipped with. They also have a web-based util there that can scan you pc to see what hardware you have....
