Ok, it is not done with computers. They use a model of the ship, film that ship, then place it on the star background. The blocks around the ship is the area that was filmed around the original model that is then placed on the star backdrop.
They have always been there, it is not new to this edition of the trilogy.
Can you sleep easily now?
Actually i'll sleep better knowing that your answer sucks. If you read what i wrote i said 50% of the shots are bad, not all of them. Half the action shots of the TIE fighters are actually really good, better than the original. BUT, this doesn't apply to all shots in the sequence. like i said before, on the VHS release of the special edition, this sequence didn't look that bad. Try watching it and maybe you'll see what im talking about.

Yeah it didnt look bad cause everything you saw was crappy quality in the first place. They had to re due the black space due to the fact it would have looked brown on high end TVs/DVD Players.I have yet to see any special effects companies take analog video and put in digital effects with it and make it unnoticable. The only way around this is to re due the Tie figher in CGI..

Turn up the brightness on your TV and I'm pretty sure you'll see it on 100% of the shots.

Lots of details (both good and bad) now stand out because the image is of much better quality on the DVD. I've noticed that on my "Thunderbirds" DVDs. Now the wires really stand out, they didn't when I viewed the show on TV.
Also, some artefacts have been added by the clean-up process. In some scenes the blue parts really stand out (e.g. the scene on Tattooine when the stormtroopers find a droid part, look at the escape pod in the background".
It is possible that the clean-up process enhanced the contrast between the different parts on some composite shots, instead of reducing it.
But on the whole, the film is much better now, the restoration job is awesome. Some very dark scenes are now seen properly, like C3PO being lowered in the oil bath in the underground garage.
The sound is great, except for 2 big glitches:
- with 5.1 sound, the rear music channels are inverted, so a trumpet will sound on the left in the front channel, and on the right in the rear channel. For a THX-certified DVD track, this is a very big fuck-up and could lead to a recall.
- with 5.1 sound, the subtitles don't show when Greedo and Jabba speak Huttese. They do on Dolby tracks.

just a note of interest.... if you watch any of the bonus stuff on the 4th disc. Check out the legacy of star wars featurette. about 5 minutes in director James Cameron is talking about Ep. 4 and says "stunning cunt" intsead of "cunning stunts".
No shit, im dead serious.

I watched A New Hope last night. Sound wasn't impressive at all. I am not talking about the 5.1 mix but other problems that should have been fixed. Numerous times the voices would raise and lower in volume during the same sentence, this could have easily of been fixed. Also, the film is very bright sounding, the highs need to be rolled off. These are problems that have been there since the originals, I was hoping they would finally fix it on the DVD format. The low end that was a new edition to the 5.1 mix was also lacking. Isntead of being clean and deep, it was rough and bloated sounding. It also made it sound as if my sub was clipping, even though I know it wasn't even close to it.
I also noticed that at the begining Leia's voice was out of sync when talking to Darth.
At the same time, numerous sound effects where changed. Examples are the wail that OB1 uses to scare off the raiders, it was completely redone and sounded much better. Water sounds(and a strange farting sound) was added to the trash compactor scene.
The DD 5.1 mix was as good as it will get from it's original source, not much you can do uless you redo the entire movie's sound.

I already own the original trilogy on VHS.
Is this really worth the upgrade to DVD?
The 5.1 dolby or whatever sounds enticing.
