Seeing how Doom 3 is the new kid on the pc killer block, this may shed some light on the A64 vs p4. Personally, dollar for dollar if building a new pc for gaming, I'd use the A64 3000 or 3200. You can't join the game faster than the server can load it, but I witnessed a 3200 completely own a P4 3.2E oc'd @ 3.7 loading BF42. Quite impressive.

I've been thinking of going with the AMD athlon 64 3500+ if you go amd go 939 socket as it seems to be the one going to have the longer life

socket 939 = dual channel memory controller = much better performance.

socket 754 (the other a64 socket) uses a single channel mem controller.

Get what ever you want, the Intel or AMD cpu's are both good.

The problem with reviews are that most are slanted one way or the other. And end user reviews are usually the same. Best thing I found out is to join a hardware forum that discusses the hardware you have or are looking to get.

IMO I'm staying with my amd barton till the pci express and cpu/chipsets all get worked out, since with pci express, one will need a new video card.

These guys can really provide solid feedback on both equipment and the underlying technology.

Bottom line though, most bang for your buck.
