I sold Doom3 on Ebay and used the $$ to help pre-order HL2. The demo for Rome was fun, but I think I'll wait until the price drops to buy the full version.
Tango's right, with the comunity of modders out there, even if the HL2 single-player sucks (which I doubt) there will always be enjoyable mods to play online. DoD would be a lot of fun on the new engine, and I can't wait for 'Action Half-life 2'

Valve sued Vivendi for copyright infringement in 2002 and vivendi is countersuing for something along the lines of wanting to own all Half-life property
but no matter, HL2 will be released no matter what
