The IT market is definitantely picking up. I will say that.
Education and experience are a must though. You will NOT get a paying job coming fresh from school. An internship yes, a paying job no.
Certifications arent worth the paper they are printed on. 10 years ago they were gold and could get you a job anywhere even with no previous experience. Since high school kids can now get certifications they are worthless.

Yes they are. A bunch of maroons all of you! and I mean YOU! Now quit picking your butt and go down to Buger King and get a job.

I have a Bachelors in Comp Sci and networking certs. Plus Checkpoint, Exchange server, Cisco certs.. etc. I also live near DC/Northern Va where the market is supposed to be the biggest in the US. I'm also working right now at Home Depot, if that tells you anything.
I wouldn't mind getting back into the market but its just too flooded and full of BS right now. It will be a while before it picks back up but I wouldnt bank on it. I'm seriously considering a career in nursing.

I didn't take any classes, but I am a network admin in my office I don't configure routers or anything basicly i set up new user accounts, email, repair PCs software and hardware issues, as well as do some cabling here and there also since our phone guys are not local some times i have to do some wiring for that as well. I really enjoy my job, even though it can get crazy at times

I want to get into network engineering(associates), then network security(bachelors), and keep going from there.
