THQ is publishing a game called Company of Hero'sa WW2, RTS. Its being Developed by Relic Entertainment. I'm sure some of you have heard or seen stuff about this. So, i was shopping around on EBgames and they are saying it's release wil be 9-11-06 they have 2 versions:
1. Company of Heroes with Bonus! ($49.99)
2. Company of Heroes Collector's Edition DVD-ROM with Bonus! ($59.99)
Bonus is as follows: Purchase Company of Heroes and receive access to the Company of Heroes BETA TEST! ... PLUS you will also receive a D-Day Map of Normandy! ...
Now i was under the impression that beta's were for testing.. So why the hell would you BUY the game JUST to get a shot at beta testing it???? I mean if its a battlefield series you kinda know what to expect, so pre-ordering it isn't such a fearfull idea. Now these guys are offering you a something slightly different, hasn't been proven good/nor bad BUT you must buy it outright before you ever have a chance to try it? Does that seem to strike anyone else as odd? Or am i just not seeing it?

That's not the first game that has had similar pre-release bonuses like that -- there have been quite a few. The one example I can think of off the top of my head is Dungeons and Dragons Online. When you pre-ordered it, you got access to the Beta (mind you, it wasn't the only way to get into the Beta, but it was a guaranteed way).
I'm not a fan of this concept in the least.

Move as a team, never move alone. Welcome to the Terrordome!
It is becoming rather standard for mmo style games. DDO did it, GW did it, AA did it, and others.
It just means you get to play it some before it goes live and get a bit of a headstart over someone who gets it the first week. You will already have a clue regarding what is where and what to do. Plus you get to help iron out any last minute bugs.
I always go for the beta offering if I can get it froma pre-order.
