Steve Irwin is dead *crocdile hunter*

I really think it was luck of the draw that the stingray killed Steve...I think he prolly just happened to be the 1 in 1000(or a million who knows what the odds were) that was unlucky with the stingray...

Its really sad that it happened and I really believe it was a freak accident...I think your being quite distrespectful to his memory chick...

This is what was reportedly happened by an eyewitness that was on the boat that Steve was on...

Irwin’s close friend and producer John Stainton was on board Croc One, Irwin’s boat, and saw what happened. “He came up over the top of a stingray and the stingray’s barb went up and went into his chest and put a hole into his heart,” Mr Stainton said.

“It’s likely that he died instantly when the barb hit him, and I don’t think that he felt any pain. He died doing what he loved best.” Peter West, a boatowner who has seen the film, said: “The footage shows him swimming in the water, the ray stopped and turned and that was it. There was no blood in the water, it was not that obvious . . . something happened with this animal that made it rear and he was at the wrong position at the wrong time and if it hit him anywhere else we would not be talking about a fatality.”

After the ray struck, Irwin collapsed immediately and colleagues pulled him aboard Croc One, which made a 30-minute dash to meet a rescue helicopter with a medical team aboard. But it was too late.

“It became clear fairly soon that he had non-survivable injuries,” said Ed O’Loughlin, who treated Irwin at the scene. “He had a penetrating injury to the left front of his chest. He had lost his pulse and wasn’t breathing.” Dr O’Loughlin said that it appeared Irwin had suffered “a form of cardiac arrest”. Irwin’s death at Batt Reef, 32 nautical miles off Port Douglas, was only the fourth known stingray death in Australian waters.

The sting was a complete fluke. One in a million is what they're saying. He was swimming over a ray which was buried in the sand.

pretty much what I thought, similar to the idea of swimming with a sharp stick and having one end lodge in the sand, the other in your chest--freak accident.

I really feel bad about this guy dying, couldn't figure it out at first--I really didn't watch his show very often. Then it just occurred to me: he just struck me as a truly good guy. I know that sounds stupid, but I'm a cynical bastard, it's very rare I see a person and just think that they are flat out, top to bottom, a truly decent person. I don't think he had a mean bone in his body, loved life, was always happy, upbeat, excited. Just about as positive as a person can be,and it didn't seem to be an act. It's just something you can feel in your gut.
Seriously, that's rare in my book.

Guys Steve Irwin was not that reckless. I know he appeared to be at times but this guy was an expert in his field and had a love for dangerous animals like no other. The reason he did what he did was to try and teach people like all of us that these beasts have a place in our lives and we dont need to simply kill them because they are scary. He never harmed animals and didnt poke them with sticks or things like that to try and piss them off.

Taking his child into the croc habitat was just one of the things he did. I watches a special on that and I can tell you that the kidd was 100% safe. The camera angle posted was the absolute worst angle you could look at. What it didnt show is that he was further away that it looked, Wes was about 3 ft away and was ready to pounce and Steve Erwin would have shoved is leg in the mouth of that croc if needed to save his child.

I have enjoyed his shows over the years and will really miss this guy.

Yah it really is strange how his death really did affect me too Cav. I didn't watch his show all that much. If all of you watch the biography of his life that they aired in 2002 you will really learn to respect him. I watched that show again last night when they aired it as a tribute to his life. It really makes you incredibly sad for his wife and children. He was just so enthusiastic about life and what he did as a person. It really makes you want to live a life so pasionetly as he did. On that show he said he wanted to be remembered for his work for animals and his enthusiasm ...he has a direct quote in his autobiography show...

RIP Steve

His memory and legacy will not be forgotten.

I agree with you 100% cav, I only saw a few things with him in it and it does make me truly sad that he died at a young age. He seemed like a passionate and nice person who loved what he did, and that is how everyone should live life.

It is really a shame.. He was such a positive and energetic guy who seemed to just love what he did. You can say at least he died doing what he loved but still you would like to see him live to a ripe old age. He could have been an activist for another 40 years. It sucks what happend and is very freakish.

I've snorkeled in Sting Ray City in the Grand Cayman literally surrounded by hundreds of sting rays, picking them up and holding them, some people were actually kissing them, and I've scuba dived with Sting Rays, and they really strike no fear into you because they are so docile, but if you do get them very mad, its just instinct you use the barb as a defense mechanism. It is as you see very rare though. Any animal can hurt you it was just a freak accident, its just the way nature is.
