Which is better for keyboards?

Postby TiNM@N » Thu Dec 07, 2006 8:08 pm

I was on skimming around and found a site that selling Z-Boards for 25% off. I found the model I was interested in but they have 2 choices USB or the PS/2.

I'm not sure if i have USB connections of 1.1 or 2.0, My current keyboard is USB. I personally HATE tying up a perfectly good slot, when I have to play musical USB with the mouse, HD backup, Mic/headset, Keyboard, Joystick, phone/PDA, iTunes. etc..

I guess I'm wondering:
Is there a MAJOR performance issues with 1.1 vs PS/2 and 2.0 vs PS/2.
also
Does it affect your system when you have multiple USB items plugged in at once?

Much Thanks

most computers have USB 2.0
If you need sometimes go to bios, take PS/2.
USB drivers are loaded with OS (i think)

I personally have the USB version of the Zboard. A nice feature is that the keyboard itself has 2 USB ports on it above the number pad. So if you have a USB mouse then you could plug that right into 1 of the ports on your keyboard, and also makes a decent spot to quickly plug in a USB stick drive or whatever.

The only big difference between 1.1 and 2.0 that I ever noticed are tranfer rates for things like External USB drives. So for figuring keyboard or mouse input both would prolly work just fine.

Your keyboard and mouse won't even come close to the cap of USB 1.1 much less 2.0. There really isn't a performance difference between USB and PS/2 that a human could exploit.

USB does work during boot up, modern BIOS recognize USB devices during the boot sequence. Older BIOS had options such as "USB Emulation" which enables and disables USB devices during boot and even older BIOS don't support USB during boot. So unless you have a computer that was made more than five years ago, you need not worry about it.
