Off topic, but don't go too far overboard - after all, we are watching...heh.

Apparently they're only offering XP on either their business level Optiplex\Precision models on their high-end XPS gaming machines. In fact, their ultra-high-end XPS Gaming rig ONLY comes with Windows XP.
Let's see Microsoft stammer and stutter their way to yet more excuses. I wonder how they'll react to new computer buyers saying, "No XP? OK I'll buy an Apple instead."

I don't think the Apple switching is as prevalent as some people would like to believe.

Your right there darknut.People just aren't buying new computers-they're keeping the old stuff until they absolutely have to buy.

What ever happened to getting developers onboard making new software for the new OS to make you want to upgrade? I will not upgrade to Vista until some peice of software comes out that I can't live without be it a game or business app. I am not going to spend a bunch of money for some new spiffy UI

I couldn't disagree more. Apple might not have double-digit market share, and they're years from reaching that goal, but I do think more and more people are exploring Apples.
Right now people with an ounce of knowledge might be hanging onto their machines to avoid the Vista plunge, but new users and many young people are buying into the Apple way of computing.
In my neighborhood vendors selling strictly PCs have moderate traffic. Local Apples stores are a frikin zoo, with lines going out the door.

http://www.macnn.com/articles/07/04/18/apple.share.grows.by.30/ Apple is feeling some benefits I think. People are finding out when they buy a Mac, they still have the option to run Windows if they decide to. The risk is smaller, so the temptation to check out OSX and the irritation with Vista seems to be adding up.

It will be a sad day in the world of computing when Apple gains a significant amount of market share.
Sat Apr 21, 2007 4:53 pm
why sad? I'm perplexed! I don't believe I've ever heard someone fear Apple.

Choice is never a sad thing. It will only be sad if three burly guys show up at your front door and force you to use Apple.
Just because an alternative answer to people's problems arises that differs from your choice, doesn't make it a "sad day".
C'mon man, lighten up.

There are lots of problems that occur when there is not a dominating OS on the market. Compatibility issues, having to switch from one interface to another, lowered pay when specialized in a previously marginally used OS, all the damn Mac users I'll run into who don't know how to talk about the Mac without quoting lines out of Apple's ads* and say completely ignorant things about computers in general.
*Especially: "it just works"; yes, Mac "just works" like any any other OS out there that crashes, has operational errors and other problems that are not OS unique. Trust me, people are going to get killed over this shit.

It's give and take. I think Apple, early on, stuck to its guns, problems be-damned and sank into near obscurity. They learned their lesson from Microsoft, swallowed their pride and changed.
Now it's Microsoft's turn. If they think force-feeding Vista to it's supposed brainless sheep customers will work, they'll soon learn to change their thinking or suffer the consequences (anyone remember RAMBUS being forced on the market? Where is RAMBUS now?)
People are not liking Vista. Businesses, never the market to change for change's sake, are not going to stand for Microsoft's bullying tactics. They have Linux and its many variants teasing them with near zero licensing costs.
If Microsoft thinks they can make up our minds for us, I think they'll be more than unhappy to hear they've made us decide to switch to Apple.

Of course they're going to make you switch to Vista. They revised their OS. Every software company does it. I can't go out and get Photoshop 4.0 or Mac OS 8 anymore. The real problem with Vista is just the lack of control for the power user and that the OS tries to do too much. Other than that, there really isn't anything wrong with it. If Vista was more customizable I wouldn't be complaining about it but since it forces me to hold its hand I hate it.
