Christ that's amazing! He's only 3 so he's basically uncoordinated still, but even with that his knowledge of color/shape allow him to make a picture out of blobs of finger paint.

That's what kills me about artists (even 3yo artists) is that they don't apply paint with razor blade accuracy, they just kinda smear it on there in great big blobs, and they wind up with a great picture.

I have no talent whatsoever, but if I were to try to paint that, it would be with a sharp little brush, and it would totally suck! I'm so envious of artists.

Whats even more amazing is that a 3yo can sit and have the train of thought to sit there that long and do any task. That is almost as amazing as the painting itself.

No, I don't think he is autistic.

Although there is some debate regarding the full spectrum of symptoms, autism is classically described as symptoms of restricted and repetitive interests, impaired communication, and impaired social interaction.

The finger painter may show repetitive interests, but I don't think his interests are restricted to only finger painting - note the part where he says he loves Ninja Turtles. Also, the fact that he is giggly and excited about his Ninja Turtle doesn't really support a diagnosis of autism.

He doesn't seem to have impaired communication. Often, autistic kids don't even start talking until a few years of age (and even into their later years their vocabulary and communication skills are quite blunted).

And finally, his social interaction seems intact. He makes eye contact with his father and smiles (which does not support the diaganosis at all). He says he likes Michaelangelo (the Ninja Turtle), and when asked, "Why?" he smiles and replies, " 'Cause I like him!". An autistic child probably wouldn't even answer this question at all...

So...I highly doubt this child is autistic. Of course, a full history and physical exam would certainly help prove or disprove the diagnosis!

Well that episode of Scrubs where the kid stacked blocks in perfect colors and made a skyscraper says the kid was autistic.

Nope that was mozart, but he was 5. Beethoven's first piece was published when he was 17.
