Recommendations on Headphones

I am looking to get a set of decent headphones, primarily for music through my computer/iPod. The original iPod earbuds are terrible, so I upgraded to Shure EC2. I haven't had much luck with those (I gave it a year and a half) because I can't get a good seal with any ear piece insert.
So, I was considering the bigger style (think Bose style). Does anyone have any recommendations? Basically my questions are:
1. Is Bose overrated, or are they one of the best?
2. Is active noise canceling worth the extra money?
