For $390 you can get:
Shuttle AN35N Ultra Pro: $65
Crucial 512mb pc2700: $75
Powercolor 9600 Pro: $159
Barton xp2500: $91
Total: $390
If you want to run at 400 FSB to get the most of your system, get ram (pc3200 or $$ pc2700 like corsair XMS or kingston hyperX) that will run at 400. You can run that Barton as a xp3000 then if you have good cooling.
The above is assuming you already have a decent PCI sound card. The onboard sound is not true soundstorm on the Shuttle. A Hercules Fortissmo III is $45 or you can get the Abit NF7-S mobo with soundstorm for $110.
I used prices from http://www.newegg.com .
The above configuration will run games fine, but more ram will definitely speed things up so keep that in mind. You must have a good PSU no matter what though !!!!!.
Don't let anyone try to convince you the Shuttle and Crucial are junk. I've built several and both are reliable and stabile, even more so than some "high end" hardware.
In fact, I recently purchased a stick of Crucial PC3200 and Kinston hyperX pc3500 for comparison. At 400 FSB there is little or no difference in performance.
Good luck.
