PC Problems :(

Postby Wesley » Fri Sep 14, 2007 9:34 am

ok guys, I just recieved a Lite-on DVD burner from my friends at newegg.com.
When I installed it I unhooked my sony DVD "Burner" (didnt recognize blank DVD media)...
The old burner was hooked up with an IDE cable directly to the Mobo, and everytime I booted my system it always asked if I wanted to boot to the CD drive before starting windows.
Now I unhooked my old sony DVD player from the IDE cable and power cable, and plugged in my new Lite-On burner(Sata 3.0 plugged into 1.5 plug). I did pull my HDD out and looked at it for a second, its rather loose in my case(always has been). I put the side back on the case, start up the CPU, and my monitor just blinks at me :(. Its searching for a signal, any signal. I had this problem before and it was b/c my video card was crap(3rd EVGA card, PSU fixed the problem), but my 6600GT card would always work and fix the problem. Not this time! I tried the different video card, swapped out my ram with old working ram and tried both current sticks in either slot. Everything powers on(that I can tell), Vid card, new DVD burner, CPU fan, case fans. If anyone has any words of wisdom that would be fantastic!

My Hard drive: Sata 1.5 WD 80GB(2-1/2 yrs old)
Mobo: ecs 755-a2, with a stupid Lithion ion battery in the corner? http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813135053
Processor: AMD 64+ 3200 socket 754
PSU: Corsair 520HX
Video Card: EVGA 7800GS AGP, also tried my trusty BFG 6600GT
Monitor: Samsung 19" LCD 2ms
Running Windows XP

At this point I am either at the HDD gone bad, or the Mobo took a shit! then again I am not a computer tech.

the only thing that I can think of would be to try and replace the new DVD with the old to see if it works with that setup again. If it doesn't Id then try switching the Hard drive out with another one and see what happens.

Next it would be to run around with my hands waiving above my head screaming at the top of my lungs cause its not working.

But knowing you, you've already tried all of that (even the screaming :D) so you'll have to wait for someone that actually might know what's happening.

Jungle, I plan to try the hard drive swap out today when I get home, I have an old compaq running XP (well I wouldn't say "running" XP).

Oh and I already tried the hands above head screaming thing, unfortunatly it didnt help the CPU, but it helped me. If the HDD swap fails, I may try the window treatment onto the cement outback.

What happens when you put it back the way it was?

Are you saying your computer doesn't POST? ie, a blank monitor from the instant you turn your computer on, no text displaying your bios, proc, etc?

Chacal when I put it back the way it was my old IDE DVD burner does not work, nor does it power on when I have a power cable running to it, though my new DVD burner works when it has a SATA power going into it.

Cav, that is exactly what I am saying, its like my video card is dead, but I tried my old 6600GT that always worked previously(5 different times b4).

Everything powers up except the old DVD burner, but I cannot just turn the machine off with the same button I use to power it on, I use the toggle on the PSU to turn it off. The Video card fan also runs when I power up the machine.

the Corsair 520HX is probably the best component I have on my CPU....
If all else fails I can hook up my old Apevia PSU and my 6600GT to test her out...

My Thoughts try them in this order (of desperation)
0) Try another monitor?
1) IDE Cable or Floppy drive plugged in backwards (wrong polarity)could cause this.
2) Any diagnostic beeps that you can check in the user manual? Does Windows boot (windows start up sound)
3) Memory still seated properly?
4) Is the video cable loose?
5 ) Is Monitor set to analog only and you are plugged into digital of vice versa
6) Pull power and battery and let sit for 10 minutes then put in battery and then put in power (you will loose all bios
settings)
7) Did you ground yourself to the case before replacing the drive? (did you throw static lightning into a component?)
8) Are the main P20/24power and P4/P6 connections still connected/seated properly to motherboard? is there a 4 pin molex
connection to the motherboard for extra power to the video card?
9) Check all internal connections
10) Remove all usb connections then try booting (my system won't boot with my hp 1350 printer connected)
11)Try booting without any drives/peripherals connected - do you at least start booting up if you do then check for
bad/reversed connections -any damaged sata cables- try another cable
12) Any bent pins on the video connector?

WTH is a diagnostic beep?
Floppy drive, no floppy drive. If this setup would have worked I would have nothing plugged into my IDE port.

Wes - I just did a big edit on my last reply - beeps when it starts up, or fails to start up. Also, some advanced motherboards have a set of colored LEDs on the back of the case or on the motherboard that you can look up in the MB manual.

I have doubts that it is you video card. If it was, the computer would operate normally but nothing would display.

In this order:

Re-seat all connections (unplugg then plug back in one at a time)
Boot.
If problem persists then disconnect non-essential devices: HDD, floppy and cd-roms.
Boot.
If the computer displays the first part of the boot sequence then the issue is with one of the devices you've disconnected.
If not, then the problem remains in some other component.

The logic behind fixing something of this nature it to rule out devices one at a time by either removing or replacing them. Starting with the devices with the least amount of work to remove/replace.
Remove / replace one device.
Boot.
If problem persists, try another device.
You can also test devices in another computer if possible.

Do you have a built in VGA adapter (a port for your monitor's cable that goes directly into the motherboard)?

I got my 6600GT working in my old Compaq, that has a 2/4X AGP.
I still got no sounds when I started the CPU without the CD/HDD drives connected, and neither way worked with either plugged in.
Monitor worked fine with the Compaq.
